Cloatea Floyd Charlton

LOS ANGELES Services for Cloatea Floyd Charlton were at 2 p.m. Jan. 2, 2004, at Angelus Funeral Home in Los Angeles with the Rev. Perry J. Jones officiating. Burial followed at Inglewood Cemetery.

Mrs. Charlton died Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003, at Xavier Permenante Hospital in Los Angeles. She was 74.

Born in Edwards, Mrs. Charlton was the daughter of the late Robert Floyd and Lucille Jackson Floyd. She attended Belmont Grade School and Belmont M.B. Church in Utica.

She graduated in 1948 from Southern Christian Institute and moved to Los Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alonzo Charlton Jr.; three brothers, Robert Andrew Floyd, Jack Floyd and R.D. Floyd; and a daughter, Barbara Ann Charlton.

Survivors include two sons, Rocky Charlton and Leonard Charlton, both of Los Angeles; a daughter, Florine Charlton of Los Angeles; eight sisters, Odell Floyd of Edwards, Glen Ander Ross of Utica, Trinell Newton and Mildred Burks, both of Vicksburg, Jearlean Franklin and Adeal Smith, both of Chicago, Patsy Ruth Ford of Los Angeles and Berdisteen Beasley of Park Forest, Ill.; five grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Johnnie Hyder

PORT GIBSON Johnnie “Doll Baby” Hyder died Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2004, at the Claiborne County Hospital. She was 66.

A resident of Port Gibson, Mrs. Hyder was a member of Mercy Seat M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roosevelt Green and Amelia Devine-Green; two sisters, Doris Moore and Willette Brown; and a brother, Benjamin Marshall.

Survivors include two sons, Eddie Green of Port Gibson and Sylvester Green of Chicago; five daughters, Christine Carroll and Carnia Hutton, both of Vicksburg, and Janice Johnson, Dorothy Hyder and Sandra Hyder, all of Port Gibson; a brother, Willie Green of Chicago; 18 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Mercy Seat M.B. Church in Port Gibson with the Rev. Frank McGriggs officiating. Burial will follow at the Pine Grove M.B. Church Cemetery in Port Gibson under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home, Inc.

Visitation will be from 1 until 5 p.m. today at the funeral home and from noon Wednesday until the service at the church.

Helen Foresman Johnston

Helen Foresman Johnston died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Heritage House. She was 99.

A native of Indiana, Mrs. Johnston had lived in Vicksburg since 1954. She was a member of the choir at Crawford Street United Methodist Church. She was a member of Chi Omega, A.A.U.W., the Salvation Army Auxiliary and ParkView Auxiliary.

She was preceded in death by her husband, W.A. “Johnny” Johnston; and her parents, John P. and Clara Kurtz Foresman.

Survivors include a son, Bob Johnston of Madison, Miss.; two grandsons, Geoffrey Johnston of Madison and Chris Johnston of Olive Branch, Miss.; a great-grandson; and a stepgreat-granddaughter.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. today at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Geoffrey Joyner officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Fisher Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 2:30 p.m. today until the service at the funeral home.

Eula Maples

ST. JOSEPH Eula Maples died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at Franklin Medical Center in Winnsboro, La. She was 47.

A resident of St. Joseph, Mrs. Maples was a retired business manager with the Tensas Parish School Board. She was a member of the Unity Assembly of God.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Newman; a sister, Mary Ann McLeod; and a brother, James Newman.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Maples of St. Joseph; a son, Joey Maples of Longview, Texas; a brother, Robert Newman of St. Joseph; and a grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Young’s Funeral Home in Ferriday, La., with the Revs. Bill Bearden and Butch Farris officiating. Burial will follow at Legion Memorial Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Newman, Bobby Newman, Keith Newman, Gary Warlick, Ricky Rush and Jim Hawsey.

Honorary pallbearers will be Justin Currington, Mike Hart and Mitch Albritton.

Lahmon Smith

Lahmon Smith died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, at his home. He was 82.

A resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Smith was a member of King David No. 2 M.B. Church. He was a retired carpenter.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Daisy Smith; two brothers, Jerome Smith and Joseph Smith; and a sister, Elvira Thomas.

Survivors include a brother, Robert Smith of Vicksburg; four sisters, Alma Duffin of Port Gibson, Pie Smith of Vicksburg, Willie May Smith of Rolling Fork and Carrie Allen of California; and other relatives and friends.
