[2/29/04]Two strong pitching performances by Laura Beth Lyons and a combined 23 walks propelled St. Aloysius to a doubleheader sweep of Enterprise-Lincoln at Bazinsky Field on Saturday.
St. Al (3-0, 2-0 Division 7-1A) needed only five innings to beat Enterprise (0-2, 0-2) 12-0 in the second game of the afternoon.
Lyons had six strikeouts in the win, and seventh-grader Catelyn Park pitched one inning of relief as the game was called because of the mercy rule.
In the opener, St. Al had six hits and took advantage of 17 walks for a 15-0 victory. A seven-run second inning put the Lady Flashes ahead 10-0, and the game ended with a five-run fourth inning.
“He’s got a young ballteam,” St. Al coach Gene Rogillio said. “It’s hard to build like he’s trying to do right now. They played as good a ballgame, considering what he had, as they could have.”
In the second game, St. Al put the game away early with eight runs in the second inning, taking an 11-0 lead.
With one out, Kayla Childress was hit by a pitch and scored on Kerut’s bunt a few batters later. The Lady Flashes batted around, and Childress’ bases-loaded triple knocked in the last three runs of the inning.
After the second inning, St. Al substituted freely, and were able to play every player on the bench.
“Everybody got to play in this game,” Rogillio said. “We tried to give everybody a chance to play, at least a chance to bat.”
Kerut led St. Al with two singles and a double, and Lyons and Childress had one hit each.
“Games like this you really don’t know what you have and what you don’t have,” Rogillio said. “We played as well as we could have.”
In the first game, Kerut had a double and an RBI and struck out three. Lyons had three strikeouts and helped her own cause with six stolen bases. Candice Park had two RBIs, and Ashley Magee had two hits and three RBIs. After the big second inning, the Lady Flashes scored five runs in the fourth to end it.
The Lady Flashes will host division rival Salem on Monday at 6 p.m.
