Vicksburg High sweeps Division 6-5A track meet

[4/14/04]Vicksburg High’s girls track team had little trouble conquering the rest of the Division 6-5A field.
The Gators made things much more interesting.
Vicksburg edged Natchez by 1/2 point 87.5-87 to make it a clean sweep for the hosts. The Missy Gators scored 107 points to Natchez’s 93.
Warren Central finished third in both boys and girls, and Forest Hill brought up the rear.
Maurice Taylor won both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. Taylor, along with James Woods, were the only Gators to register two individual first-places.
Woods, a junior, won the 800 run by three seconds, and the 1,600 run by six seconds.
The Gators’ 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relay teams both won first places. The 200 relay team edged Warren Central by one second for the victory.
Charles White captured first in the pole vault, and Casey Younger won the shot put.
Warren Central’s Fred Payne defeated teammate Larry Warner in the triple jump as the Vikings’ registered one first-place finish.
The Missy Gators won first or second places in 14 of the 16 events to distance themselves from Natchez.
Courtney Prentiss captured the dash double with wins in the 100 and 200, while freshman Tiffany Williams won the 800 and 1600 runs. Jamie Hullum finished first in the 3,200 run, and the Missy Gators’ 4-by-200 and 4-by-400 relay teams both captured first-place finishes.
Katrina Sanders also earned two first-place medals in the shot put and discus.
Warren Central scored 40 points to earn third place. Julie Spence captured second place in the 1,600 run, Ebon Williams won second in the discus, and Amanda Doyle won second in the triple jump.
