Lyons, Mazzanti reel in top awards at St. Aloysius

[5/19/04]A pair of multi-sport athletes were honored as St. Aloysius’ top performers at the school’s awards banquet on Sunday.

Laura Beth Lyons, who excelled in basketball and softball, was named outstanding female athlete. Drew Mazzanti, who played football, basketball and baseball, was named outstanding male athlete.

As a pitcher for St. Al’s fast-pitch softball team, Lyons was selected the Vicksburg Post’s Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003. She went 10-6 this season, with 130 strikeouts and a 0.45 ERA in 104 innings pitched. She threw five shutouts, two one-hitters and one no-hitter.

In basketball, Lyons averaged 9 points, 4 rebounds and 5 steals per game while playing point guard for the Lady Flashes.

Mazzanti was a first-team all-state selection at punter, where he averaged nearly 40 yards per kick, and also played quarterback and defensive back. He threw for 891 yards and 10 touchdowns last season, more than all of St. Al’s quarterbacks in the last three seasons combined. At defensive back, Mazzanti had 56 tackles and a team-high four interceptions.

Mazzanti was also a guard for St. Al’s basketball team and a shortstop for the baseball team.
