John Denton Bledsoe Sr.
RAYMOND John Denton Bledsoe Sr. died Monday, June 7, 2004, in Albuquerque, N.M. He was 84.
Mr. Bledsoe was a retired U.S. Air Force lieutenant colonel and a recipient of the Purple Heart. He served in World War II as a navigator on a B-24 bomber, and was a German prisoner of war for two years.
He was born in Lynn Creek and later moved to Collins, where he married Neal Jones of Raymond.
He received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture from the University of Arizona and later worked for the Arizona State School for the Deaf and Blind in Tucson.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Neal Jones Bledsoe, and his parents, William Henry and Ida Louella Quinn Bledsoe.
He is survived by two sons, John D. Bledsoe Jr. of Albuquerque and Frederick W. Bledsoe of Ridgecrest, Calif.; one brother, Alva Gilmore “Doc” Bledsoe of Hurst, Texas; and six grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Raymond City Cemetery with the Rev. Luther Ott, rector of the Episcopal Church of the Creator, officiating.
Memorials may be made to favorite charities. Cards and expressions of sympathy may be sent in care of Riles Funeral Home, 5000 Indiana Ave., in Vicksburg.
Sadie Green-Harlt
GREENVILLE Sadie Green-Harlt died Friday, June 11, 2004, at Sittard-Geleen Hospital in Germany. She was 51.
Mrs. Green-Harlt, a former resident of Greenville, lived in Hogn-Bush, Germany.
She is survived by three children, Tequinna, Patrick and Pierre, all of Germany; her mother, Blanche Green of Greenville; five sisters, Jeanette Dorsey of Chicago, Mary Kimble of Vicksburg, Martha Jones and Bernice Thomas, both of Greenville, and Nazaree Fults of Hollandale; and two brothers, Manuel Green of St. Louis and Willie “Charles” Green of Greenville.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at New Mount Zion M.B. Church with the Rev. W.E. Tinson officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Valley Cemetery in Panther Burn.
Lloyd C. Price
Lloyd C. Price died Saturday, June 19, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. He was 91.
Mr. Price was born in Arkansas City, Ark., and lived in Vicksburg for more than 50 years. He was retired from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 30 years of service, and was the last pilot for the Steamer Sprague.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and was pilot and captain for the dredges Charles H. West and Lipscomb.
He was a member of Bowmar Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carro Price; one sister, Helen Price; and his parents, Jack and Vera Hite Price.
He is survived by one daughter, Mary L. Wheat of Montgomery, Ala.; one son, Wayne Price of Vicksburg; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Cedar Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Terry White, pastor of Bowmar Baptist Church, officiating.
Visitation will be at Fisher Funeral Home at 1 p.m. Monday.
Memorials may be made to Bowmar Baptist Church, 1825 U.S. 61 South, in Vicksburg.
Shirley Jean Smith Reeves
PORT GIBSON Shirley Jean Smith Reeves died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at her home. She was 53.
Mrs. Reeves was a former principal of Port Gibson High School and was an instructor at Alcorn State University.
A graduate of Addison High School, she received her bachelor’s degree from ASU, a master’s degrees from Mississippi State University and a doctorate degree from Jackson State University.
She was a member of First Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dr. Jimmy L. Smith and Henry Allen Smith; one sister, Geraldine Smith; and her parents, Johnny and Pearline Smith Sr.
She is survived by her husband, Donald E. Reeves; two sons, Antwan D. Reeves and Erek D. Reeves, both of Port Gibson; two brothers, Johnnie Smith Jr. and Willie Smith, both of Port Gibson; two sisters, Dorothy Brown of New York and Annie Lee McGowan of Houston, Texas; and one granddaughter.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Ashland Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Wilbert Archer, Charlie Norrell Sr., Cardell Williams, Marcus Jones, Herbert Becks and Bruce Wells.
Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons of First Baptist Church and the men of Omega Psi Phi.
Dorothy Edna Leichenauer Wallace
Dorothy Edna Leichenauer Wallace died Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at her daughter’s home in Baton Rouge, La. She was 77.
Mrs. Wallace was preceded in death by her husband, James Andrew Wallace.
She is survived by two daughters, Linda Walker of Vicksburg, Susan Rothermel of Baton Rouge; her son, Jim Wallace of Canandaigua, N.Y., and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Matthias Episcopal Church, 3301 St. Matthias Drive, Shreveport, La. Burial will follow at 5 p.m. at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church Cemetery in Bovina.
Visitation will be at St. Matthias from 9 a.m. Monday until the service.
