Mathes handles Vikings at AAU junior tourney

[7/7/04]Vicksburg’s Avery Mathes tossed a complete-game shutout to lead the Gators’ summer team to a 5-0 victory over Warren Central in the Junior Amateur Athletic Union summer baseball tournament on Tuesday.

Mathes struck out six, walked two and allowed three Vikings’ hits.

Jordan Henry led the Gators with a pair of singles, while Steven Price doubled and Stanley Bufkin hit an RBI double.

Vicksburg broke open the scoreless game in the fourth inning with a pair of runs off of WC’s Parker White. The Gators added single runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh.

White pitched 6 1/3 innings, struck out eight and walked five.

Kyle Calhoun, Harry Ferguson and Chris Whittington each singled in the loss.

Warren Central is scheduled to play Jackson Prep today at 3:30 p.m., while the Gators are set to play Brandon at 7:30. Both games are at Jackson Academy.
