Porters Chapel again blind in preparation for CM&I

[9/3/04]Hold the popcorn. Movie time at Porters Chapel Academy has been canceled again.

For the third time in as many weeks, PCA coach Randy Wright has been unable to obtain a game film from his opponent. It’s a frustrating turn of events that is almost unheard of in an age of instant communication, and it’s left the Eagles flying blind again as they prepare for their district opener against CM&I.

“I don’t like it one bit. I like to be a little bit in the know and have some kind of idea of what they do, how many they have, what they look like, so we can be prepared,” Wright said. “It’s very difficult and frustrating as a coaching staff. You pretty much have to prepare for everything, and it makes our job a lot more difficult.”

The lack of game film is becoming routine for the Eagles. Wilkinson County Christian hadn’t played a jamboree game, so there was no current film available before their season opener. Same with last week’s opponent, Greenville Christian, which didn’t play a jamboree and had a bye week before playing PCA.

Getting information on CM&I has taken on epic proportions, however. Not only did the Crusaders not play a jamboree game, they canceled their season-opener against Hillcrest. Last week, they were scheduled to play University Christian Prep in Shreveport but had to forfeit after the team bus broke down.

Wright has called more than a dozen other coaches to ask about CM&I. No one has been able to tell him anything. Some reports even indicated that the Crusaders haven’t practiced.

“That’s got me worried that maybe they have a real good team and they’re trying to hide something,” Wright said.

Wright and the Eagles shouldn’t have much to worry about if history is any indication. CM&I has lost 20 of its last 21 games, and won just two times since joining the Mississippi Private Schools Association in 2001.
