Top-tier teams to play for Coca-Cola crown

[11/9/04]Some of the top teams from the state will call Warren County home starting today for the annual Coca-Cola Classic.

Jackson powers Provine and Callaway will join the likes of Vicksburg High and Warren Central in the three-day tournament which will be played at both VHS and Warren Central.

Provine’s boys finished last season as the top-ranked team in Mississippi and will highlight the first day in an anticipated matchup with Warren Central.

The Vikings won the Division 6-5A championship last season and return several key players from that team.

A boys matchup at Vicksburg High between Port Gibson and Callaway will highlight that side of the bracket.

On the girls side, highly ranked Provine and Callaway both will open play against Forest Hill and Port Gibson, respectively.

Juanita Ward, one of the highest recruited players in the state this year, leads the Lady Chargers into their 4 p.m. game against Port Gibson. Callaway finished last season ranked third, while Provine ended the season at No. 17.

Vicksburg’s girls and boys will play Hazlehurst at 7 and 8:30 p.m., respectively. Warren Central’s girls will start the tournament at 4 p.m. against Jefferson County.

The girls championship is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Saturday at VHS, while the boys championship is scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m. at WC.
