[11/9/04]The medical report at Warren Central was lengthy, but certainly not as bad as thought on Friday night.
The Vikings enter the Class 5A state playoffs Friday night against Tupelo at home. Coach Curtis Brewer said many of his players will be in therapy this week, but most of the injured should return.
“I would hope all of them will play,” Brewer said. “Some of them may be in a limited role.”
Fullback Jesse Pedyfoot, who earned a spot on the national Who’s Who of high school sports, suffered a high ankle sprain against Vicksburg. Originally, it was feared that Pedyfoot had broken a bone in his leg.
“If anybody knows anything about high ankle sprains is that they take a long time to heal,” Brewer said.
The bruising senior fullback rushed for 100 yards on five carries and scored a touchdown to help WC (10-1) to a 37-0 win over Vicksburg.
Pedyfoot was just one of a host of injuries that plagued WC. Quarterback Christian Hales, who hurt his shoulder against Grenada, sat out the second half of the Vicksburg game. His status for the Tupelo matchup is still unclear.
Hard-hitting safety Chico Hunter was knocked silly on a collision with VHS quarterback Eugene Morgan and also sat out the second half. Brewer said Hunter will be able to play.
Defensive lineman Rod Goings is in therapy for a shoulder injury and is questionable, and linebacker Zach Balthrop re-injured his ankle.
Balthrop had hurt his ankle earlier in the season and got stepped on in the Vicksburg win. He is in a cast and hopes to practice by Thursday.
“He’s really sore,” Brewer said. “He won’t be doing anything this week except paying attention and seeing how things go.”
Warren Central, which enters the playoffs for a state-record 20th straight time, lost in the first round last year to Horn Lake.
Tupelo (5-6) is coming off a 41-10 loss to No. 4 Olive Branch.
“They are a very big team,” Brewer said.
Kickoff Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m.
