Gloria Thames Bottom

A memorial and Eucharist service for Gloria Thames “Glo” Bottom will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Church of the Holy Trinity. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Riles Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until the service in McInnis Parish Hall at the church.

Mrs. Bottom died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, at Rose Garden Adult Foster Home in Lake Oswego, Ore. She was 93.

Mrs. Bottom was born in Vicksburg, where she lived at Anchor to Windward. She was a charter member of the Vicksburg Theatre Guild and was an original “can-can cutie” in the melodrama “Gold in the Hills.” She was cast in the lead in “Holiday,” the first three-act play performed by the theater group. She also directed plays.

She was an officer in the Vicksburg Book Club and authored “A Thankful and Joyful Heart,” which was published by the Episcopal Church nationwide. She was a member of the League of Women Voters.

Mrs. Bottom was a member of the Church of the Holy Trinity, where she taught Sunday school, led the Episcopal Young Churchmen, served as president of the Episcopal Church Women and became the first woman elected a member of the Vestry. She was in Cursillo at the diocesan level and served as president of the Episcopal Church Women of Mississippi. She was also the first woman to serve on the Diocesan Executive and Diocesan Standing committees and to serve as a delegate to the Episcopal General Convention.

Nationally, she served on the Standing Commission on World Missions and voted in the General Convention of 1976 that authorized the ordination of women in the Episcopal Church. She was a member of the Stewardship Committee of Christ Church in Lake Oswego, where she had been a resident for the past eight years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Deloach Thames Sr. and Nell Hobart Thames; her husband, Rear Adm. John Thomas Bottom Jr.; two sisters, Mrs. Carlton R. Todd and Mrs. Kenneth A. Wright; and a brother, Chancellor James DeLoach Thames Jr.

She is survived by a son, John T. Bottom III of Lake Oswego; a granddaughter, Sophie Rose Bottom of Lake Oswego; nephews, including Lee Davis Thames of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Memorials may be made to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Vicksburg.

Kelly Hill Jr.

PORT GIBSON Kelly Hill Jr. died Saturday, Nov. 6, 2004, at Claiborne County Hospital in Port Gibson. He was 61.

Mr. Hill was preceded in death by his father, Kelly Hill Sr.; a brother, Edward Lewis Caston; and a sister, Emma Jean Williams.

He is survived by his wife, Geneva Hill of Port Gibson; five daughters, Linda Elaine Bailey of Shreveport, La., and Marie Clark, Shontae Becks, Kewanna Hill and Jacqueline Hill, all of Port Gibson; 10 sons, Willie Calvin Hill, Michael Bailey, Joseph Hill, Kelly Earl Hill, Antonio LeKent Hill, Miguel Trell Hill, Kelvin Hill and Tierre Hill, all of Port Gibson, Ronald Hill of Clinton and Herbert Peter Hill of Atlanta; his mother, Willie B. Hill of Vicksburg; six sisters, Willie Mae Walker of Aurora, Ill., and Mary O’Neal, Isabella Heath, Ruthie Anderson, Etta Harris and Rena Washington, all of Vicksburg; four brothers, Bennie Caston of Lansing, Mich., and Shelly Hill, Tommy Caston and Willie Noye, all of Vicksburg; 40 grandchildren, including Montre Bailey-Hill and Rosner Buie of Port Gibson, whom he reared; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson has charge of arrangements.

Glen Steen

Glen Steen died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004, at his home. He was 47.

A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mr. Steen was a graduate of Warren Central High School. He and his brother owned and operated Vicksburg Contract Services Inc. He was a member of Warrenton Church of Christ and Campbell Swamp Hunting Club.

He is survived by his parents, Leo and Rose Steen of Vicksburg; a daughter, Jessica Crouse of Vicksburg; a brother, Mark Steen of Vicksburg; a sister, Gail Kavanaugh of Vicksburg; a grandchild, Summer Crouse of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Glenwood Funeral Home with Wayne Moore and Les Ferguson officiating. Burial will follow at Yokena Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 until 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Tim Wright, Chris Gillis, Gary Grey, Doyle Lee, Bill Westbrook and Billy White.

Honorary pallbearers will be the deacons and elders of Warrenton Church of Christ and members of the Campbell Swamp Hunting Club.
