Leonard Carter
Leonard Carter died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at St. Dominic Hospital in Jackson. He was 84.
Formerly of Chicago, Mr. Carter was a member of Hopewell M.B. Church. He was an Army veteran and was a retired mechanic for Amtrak. He was a resident of Vicksburg.
Survivors include his wife, Gwendolyn Elmore-Carter of Vicksburg; a son, Curtis Carter of Dallas, Texas; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends, including Ethel Elmore of Vicksburg and Edward Cooper of Chicago.
Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.
Rush Major Hicks Sr.
LAKE PROVIDENCE Rush Major Hicks Sr. died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at Richland Manor Nursing Home in Delhi. He was 87.
A resident of Lake Providence, Mr. Hicks was a veteran and the owner and operator of an automobile parts store.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Mae Hicks.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Rush M. Hicks Jr. of Lake Providence and Patrick E. Hicks of Fairfield Bay, Ark.; a daughter, Linda Lou Lovell of Lake Providence; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at a later date. Cox Funeral Home in Delhi has charge of arrangements.
Catherine Boyd Kelly
Catherine Boyd Kelly died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 83.
A lifelong resident of Vicksburg, Mrs. Kelly was the daughter of the late Jesse A. Sr. and Minnie D. Miles Boyd. She graduated in 1941 from Carr Central High School.
She worked as a switchboard operator for South Central Bell for 18 years and was a phone operator for Waterways Experiment Station for 17 years. She was a member of St. Paul Catholic Church.
Mrs. Kelly was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Kelly.
Survivors include a sister, Corrine Myers of Vicksburg; a brother, Jesse A. Boyd Jr. of Vicksburg; seven nieces; and other relatives.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Patrick Farrell, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon Thursday until the service at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Tom McLane, Billy Joe Cross, Joe Loviza, Bert Day, Chris Antoine Jr. and Clyde Roberson.
Honorary pallbearers will be Bobby Flanagan, James Speyerer, A.J. Breithaupt, Roy McDonald, Dr. Thomas Sligh, Dr. Martin Newcomb, Dr. Daniel Edney, Dr. Steven Zachow, James “Jay” Kelly, John Tollison, Shirley Adams, Kalana Gray, Katie Gray, Mary Johnson, Gertrude Williams and employees of Patient’s Choice Hospice.

Bertrice Kline
COLUMBUS, Ohio Bertrice Kline died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, in Columbus, Ohio. She was 89.
Mrs. Kline had been a longtime resident of Vicksburg before moving to Columbus.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Carmel Manor, 910 Bowman St. in Vicksburg. Newcomer-Farley Funeral Home in Columbus has charge of arrangements.
Christine Laverne Green Martin
Services for Christine Laverne Green Martin will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Mount Calvary M.B. Church with the Rev. Mincer Minor officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Thursday, with family hour from 6 until 7, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Martin died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at River Region Medical Center. She was 35.
She was born in Memphis and had lived most of her life in Vicksburg. She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Alberta Moore; and an uncle, Alonzo Green.
Mrs. Martin is survived by her husband, Willie Martin Sr.; three sons, Willie Martin Jr., Marques Martin and Reginald Martin; eight daughters, Lawanda Green, Tamekia Martin, Brittany Martin, Lakisha Martin, Agnes Martin, Ti’Esha Martin, Fredrica Martin and Tristin Martin; her mother, Catherine Green, all of Vicksburg; her father, Ramond Mitchell of Memphis; three brothers, Alan Green, Steven Green and Anthony Green, all of Vicksburg; one granddaughter; and other relatives and friends, including Reginald Smith.
