Porters Chapel shocks Wayne, moves closer to overall tourney|[2/16/05]

Porters Chapel is one win away from reaching the overall academy tournament and three wins from winning a state championship following a 65-61 overtime win over Wayne on Tuesday night in the opening round of the Academy-A state tournament in Marks.

Hayden Hales scored a game-high 23 points and Dan Ivey added 16 for the Eagles (16-15), who will play host Delta Academy on Thursday at 8:15 p.m.

Against Wayne, Porters Chapel fell behind by nine points with four minutes to play, but Blake Purvis hit a pair of 3-pointers and Cole Smith sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play.

Ivey scored four points in the overtime and the Eagles’ defense held Wayne to four points in the extra period.
