A woman was found shot at her home in Utica this morning. Her mother was also found with a head injury, said Capt. Steve Pickett of the Hinds County Sheriff’s Department.

Tammy Davis, 33, was pronounced dead at the home she shared with her mother at 5144 Mississippi 27 South. She was shot several times, Pickett said. Police do not know what type of gun was used.

Her mother, Robert Smith, 77, was found with head trauma. She was in stable condition at University Mississippi Medical Center this morning, Pickett said.

Hinds County deputies were called at 5:19 a.m. after Ms. Davis’ sister found her body. Neighbors did not report hearing any gunshots, Pickett said.

Police were searching for Ms. Davis’s boyfriend, 31-year-old Gregory Smith of Fayette, Pickett said. Authorities believe Smith was driving Ms. Davis’ car, a black 2000 Ford Escort with the Mississippi license plate 337 HIQ. Smith does not have a listed street address, Pickett said.

In Vicksburg, city and county law officers searched in the area of Mission 66 and Baldwin Ferry Road after a report the suspect may be in the area. No one was found.

The car was the only item reported missing from the home, Pickett said. The couple did not have a history of domestic violence, he said.

Utica is in southwest Hinds County about 20 miles from Vicksburg.
