The Culkin Baseball Complex will be hopping in this weekend’s sweltering heat as it prepares to host a pair of tournaments.

On Friday and Saturday, an 8-under tournament is scheduled for the fields on Mount Alban Road. A 12-under tournament is scheduled for just Saturday.

“We’re expecting a good day,” said Mandy Boyd, who is helping to organize the event.

Four teams are registered to play in the 12-under tournament. Culkin will field a team called the Mississippi Wildcats, while the Warren County Vikings, a Vicksburg Baseball Association team and a team made up of Mission 66 All-Stars is planning on participating.

The Mission 66 League just concluded its first season of youth baseball.

Games will begin on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and each team is guaranteed at least three games.

The 8-under tournament has seven teams registered, including one from host Culkin and two from the Vicksburg Baseball Association. Teams from West Monroe, Canton and Brandon also are entered.

Games will begin on Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., then span all of Saturday starting at 8:30.

“We’ll probably play a round-robin format,” said Rick Smith, the 8-under tournament director.

Smith said he is hoping to host more tournaments next year, but the word got out late this year and many teams already had commitments.

“We have to start advertising in January and February,” Smith said.

Temperatures are expected to climb into the upper 90s this weekend with heat indexes climbing well over 100 degrees.

“I’m not looking forward to that,” Boyd said with a chuckle.

The Culkin Tournament will lead into the two-weekend baseball marathon at Halls Ferry Park the following weekend.

The annual Governor’s Cup is scheduled for July 29-31 and Aug. 5-7.
