Tickets for a reunion for all former Temple High School athletes are still available, but Vicksburg High football coach Alonzo Stevens said they are going fast.

The reunion, scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. at the Vicksburg Auditorium, will feature most of the athletes and coaches that built Temple, an all-black school in Vicksburg that existed from 1959-1973.

&#8220If you don’t have a ticket, you can’t get into the event,” said Stevens, who said more than 200 former coaches and athletes are expected to attend.

Longtime college football coaches Houston Markham and W.C. Gordon, two of the all-time winningest coaches in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, began their careers at Temple.

Members of the Buccaneers championship football and basketball teams will highlight the program. Speeches by coaches and an open mic segment where former athletes can talk about memories of the school will be available, Stevens said.

&#8220It’s going to be a night of nights,” said Stevens, who expected former players and coaches from as far away as California and Michigan to make the trip to the River City. Many from the Greenville and Greenwood areas who played against the mighty Temple teams expressed interest in meeting some of the former Buccaneers, Stevens said.

Temple High sat where the current Vicksburg Junior High sits on Baldwin Ferry Road. The football team used to play on Temple Field, adjacent to the school.
