Nine teams in two brackets will open play today in the USSSA State All-Star Championship Tournament at Halls Ferry Park.
The field includes two Vicksburg teams in the 10-year-olds’ tournament and one in the 9-year-olds’ tournament. The nine teams in each division have been broken into three pools and will play two seed games before a single-game elimination tournament bracket is drawn.
The play-in game will start at 10 a.m. on Saturday at Halls Ferry Park. The championship game for the 10-year-olds’ division is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. on Bluff Field. The 9-year-olds’ division title game is set for 5 p.m. on National Field.
The 10-year-olds’ division features at least three teams that are regulars at Vicksburg’s Governor’s Cup, a summer season ending tournament at Halls Ferry Park.
“The Madison Vipers and the Madison Bandits have been in a lot of Governor’s Cups. And then there’s our local team, the Mudcats,” Vicksburg Baseball Association president Charles Camillo said.
For the Mudcats, this will be the first of two straight state tournaments. The 10-year-olds’ tournament team also will play in next week’s Cal Ripken State Tournament set for Halls Ferry Park.
“This year’s Mudcats are a combination of the old Gators team and some returning Mudcats. We also have a local team called the Vicksburg Titans. This is a new team made up of all-stars from our Prep League,” Camillo said.
The Titans get to start off pool play with a noon date against the Vipers on Bluff Field. They will play Oak Grove at 4 p.m.
The Mudcats begin action at 2 p.m. against Hancock-Harrison County on Bluff Field. Their second game will be at 8 against Brandon.
In the 9-year-olds’ division, Vicksburg will be represented by the Patriots.
