Warren Central’s girls basketball romp through the State Games of Mississippi is complete – with gold medals.

Sha’Kayla Caples hit a bank shot from about eight feet away with 10 seconds to play Sunday as WC defeated Southeast Lauderdale 55-54 for the school’s first State Games gold medal in girls basketball.

WC will be in display once more before the school year begins when the team hosts Port Gibson on Tuesday at 6 p.m. It will be WC’s 23rd game in 32 days.

Warren Central trailed Southeast 54-51 with 25 seconds to play. Denetra Foy hit two free throws to get WC within a point. Southeast’s Brittany Roberts was quickly fouled and missed the front end of a 1-and-1 – make the first free throw and earn a second shot. The miss set up Caples’ go-ahead basket, but with five seconds to play, WC fouled Lucy Ruffin, Southeast’s best player.

She also missed the front end of a 1-and-1 and WC secured the gold medal.

Caples finished with 24 points in the championship game.

To reach the title game, Warren Central used a 28-point second half to down Newton, 46-37. Tay Wince and Vernadette Hale each had 13 points in the victory.

WC coach Donny Fuller said his team had won five silver medals and one bronze in the past.
