A Vicksburg man died Saturday after he was struck by what police believe may have been an accidental gunshot. The man’s roommate, however, was arrested and charged with manslaughter pending completion of the investigation.

Delvin M. Paige, 20, 1320 Second North St., was wounded Saturday evening by a single .38 caliber pistol round at his residence. He was driven by private vehicle to River Region Medical Center and the driver contacted authorities en route, said Johnnie Edwards, an investigator for the Vicksburg Police Department.

Paige was pronounced dead at the hospital at 7:21 p.m., said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey, explaining that the bullet apparently hit Paige in the buttocks, went up through his abdomen and stopped in his chest.

Huskey said an autopsy is scheduled for today.

Authorities said Paige’s roommate, DeMarcus Preacely, 19, admitted responsibility, but said the gunshot was accidental. “We’ll have to continue investigating before we know anything for sure,” Edwards said.

Preacely was arrested by Vicksburg police at 8:37 p.m. at River Region, where he had gone after the shooting. His arraignment was scheduled for 4 p.m. today.
