Grand jury delivers murder, manslaughter indictments|[11/02/07]

Murder and manslaughter indictments have been issued by Warren County grand jurors who reviewed separate homicides in Vicksburg.
Antonio Hicks, 27, 104 Starlight Drive, faces murder indictment for the shooting death of 31-year-old Leroy Barnes, 1013 Urban Court. Hicks was also indicted for possessing a weapon as a convicted felon.
Willie Fitzgerald Sanders, 42, 1517 South St., faces manslaughter indictment for the stabbing of death of 36-year-old William Mayer, 101 Hunter Trail, Florence.
Hicks and Sanders, both previously convicted felons, were also indicted as habitual offenders. Assistant District Attorney Mike Bonnor said that means if also convicted as habitual offenders, both would serve the maximum sentences for their respective charges. That would mean life without parole for Hicks and 20 years without parole for Sanders.
Hicks’ previous felony convictions include shooting into an occupied dwelling and possession of an unregistered firearm, while Sanders’ consists of receiving stolen property and possession of cocaine.
Barnes was shot the afternoon of Aug. 17 in Vicksburg’s fifth homicide this year. Barnes was driven by private vehicle to River Region Medical Center after the shooting occurred in the 1800 block of Main Street and bled to death from a bullet that entered his thigh.
Another Vicksburg man, James Ward, 28, was initially arrested, but was later freed after witnesses gave additional information.
Hicks surrendered to Vicksburg police the night of the shooting, which had apparently stemmed from an argument over money, police reports said. He has remained in the Warren County Jail without bond.
Mayer’s death, which came about four hours after an early-morning stabbing May 5 at Waffle House on East Clay Street, was the city’s first homicide of 2007. Mayer died just before 6 a.m. at River Region during surgery.
An autopsy later showed he had died from multiple stab wounds to the chest.
Sanders and Mayer apparently did not know each other. One was entering the restaurant as the other was leaving when an argument began, police reports said. It was not known what had started the quarrel.
Sanders was arrested minutes after the stabbing and was charged with murder. There was no indication why jurors opted for the lesser charge. Sanders has been free from the Warren County Jail on $100,000 bond.
In addition to the homidide cases, jurors returned 40 other indictments before adjourning their four days of deliberation.

Warren County grand juries are chosen each January, May, July and October. Law enforcement officers present cases and jurors decide if there is enough evidence for a criminal trial. If so, indictments are issued and defendants, most of whom have been free on bond, appear at a formal arraignment to hear the charges they face. Most then remain free on bond pending resolution of the indictments through trial or plea bargains.
