An 81-year-old Vicksburg man died near his mailbox Monday afternoon when struck by a vehicle police believe was driven by a neighbor who was drunk and driving with her license already suspended for suspicion of driving while intoxicated.
Killed was John E. Parrette, 117 Roseland Drive. He was pronounced dead at the scene after a 2002 Toyota Tacoma went off the residential street and hit him, Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.
Jailed was Brandy Michelle Wallace, 26, 133 Roseland Drive. Stewart said Wallace was headed north at an unknown speed when her vehicle went off the road. It was reported at 4:17 p.m.
Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey said Parrette died from head trauma. His body was being taken to Jackson today for an autopsy before being released to Fisher Funeral home.
Stewart said evidence at the scene led police to believe Wallace was intoxicated, so she was arrested and charged with felony aggravated DUI, an offense that carries a sentence of five to 25 years in a state penitentiary and requires a minimum 85 percent of the sentence be served. Stewart also said Wallace faces charges of driving with no proof of insurance and driving while her license was suspended under the implied consent law, which Stewart said regards a previous DUI case.
Stewart said Wallace and the police department are awaiting results to determine Wallace’s blood-alcohol level.
Wallace, who was apparently alone, was in the Warren County Jail on $75,000 bond. Her initial hearing was set for 4 p.m. Wednesday at Vicksburg Municipal Court.
The vehicular fatality was the 4th in Vicksburg and the 13th in the countythis 2007.
