Goals came quick and furious in St. Aloysius’ Saturday night match with visiting St. Frederick out of Monroe at Balzli Field.
The two teams combined for seven first half goals, including a pair in the first 1 minute and 5 seconds of the game. St. Frederick (10-4-1), however, dominated the second half, extending a 4-3 lead into a 7-3 victory over the Flashes (2-4-2).
“We do have a lot of young players, but tonight we were missing our sweeper and a couple of our other key players who haven’t made it back yet,” first-year St. Al coach Will Vollor said. “This was still a good warm-up game for us because we have a big home district game Tuesday against Madison-St. Joseph.”
To St. Fred coach George Judd, the blooming intrastate rivalry with St. Al in soccer is a good thing for both programs. It was certainly a welcome matchup for St. Al, which was playing its first home game since the season-opener in November.
“This is the third year in a row that we’ve played them and it’s a nice trip over here. This year, they came to our tournament and got to play some good competition from the Monroe area,” Judd said.
St. Frederick has had to play a stronger schedule this season after moving up to Louisiana’s Division II.
“We’re playing with all the big dogs this year,” Judd added.
Just 44 seconds into the game, St. Fred got on the board with a goal from Matt Blanchard off an assist from Michael Fontenot.
St. Al answered immediately as Steven Mazzanti blasted a shot from 40 yards out to tie it at 1-1. Matt Thornton got the assist.
Fontenot booted in a pair of goals, two minutes apart, to put St. Fred up 3-1.
Mazzanti came back with a chip shot after a nice lofted pass from Thornton to cut the lead to 3-2 at the 17:53 mark.
St. Al keeper Michael Stewart made four straight saves, including a hard shot right off his chest, to keep the Flashes within a goal. St. Al, though, began tiring late in the half and Fontenot got his third goal of the half in the 30th minute for a 4-2 lead.
St. Al got a break with a double-yellow card foul, resulting in a penalty kick goal from Thornton in the 35th minute to make it 4-3.
St. Frederick kept the Flashes off the board in the second half. Blanchard put St. Fred up 5-3 when he hooked a shot past Stewart, who came out too quick to challenge a breakaway in the 45th minute.
St. Fred added two final goals on Logan Blackford’s penalty kick and Daniel Showers’ goal in the 73rd minute.

Taylor George scored a goal in each half to lead the Lady Flashes (4-5).
George scored in the 34th minute off an assist by Haley Davis for a 1-0 lead.
In the 57th minute, George broke free and scored after an assist from Riley Griffith to make it 2-0.
St. Al keeper Tori Hinds made a pair of saves to keep St. Frederick off the board in the second half.
“I thought the girls played real good. They were aggressive,” Vollor said.

Warren Central outshot Terry 15-2, but couldn’t score a goal and had to settle for a scoreless tie. WC will play at Callaway on Friday at 5:30 p.m., then host Greenville-Weston in a division game next Saturday at 2 p.m.
