It wasn’t quite a clean sweep for Natchez, but it was close enough.
Natchez had winners in eight of the 11 weight classes at Saturday’s Vicksburg-Warren Invitational, helping it rack up 70 points and easily beat Vicksburg to win the team title. Natchez, which was second at last year’s Class 5A state meet, finished with 70 points to 47 for Vicksburg High. Port Gibson was third, with 24 points, and meet host Warren Central was third with 13.
Vicksburg’s Adam Reed, Marcus Allen and Emmanuel Lofton were the only lifters to break Natchez’s stranglehold on first place. Reed won the 123-pound division by lifting a total of 725 pounds in the bench press, dead lift and squat; Allen was first in the 198-pound division with a total of 1,195 pounds; and Lofton was first among 242-pounders with 1,285 pounds.
Warren Central’s top lifters were Cody McBroom, who was second in the 123-pound weight class, and Steven Jordan who was third in the 275-pound class. Rodrick Hopkins of Port Gibson was second in the 123-pound division.
Natchez’s winners included Xavier Hill (114-pound division), Roderick Allen (132 pounds), Willie Newman (148 pounds), Jarrett Ealey (165 pounds), Callon Green (181 pounds), Johnny Griffin (220 pounds), Danny Thompson (275 pounds) and Keith Dee (298 pounds).
