Fans going to Saturday’s Red Carpet Classic basketball games at Warren Central could have something else to shoot for — a new car.
Local car dealer George Carr is sponsoring a half-court shooting contest during halftime of the Classic’s final game between Forest Hill, a top-five ranked team, and the Warren Central Lady Vikes. The prize will be a Pontiac G-5.
Fans who purchase the $6 Classic tickets can register for the random drawing, which will begin before the day’s final game. The Classic tips off at 10 a.m. with a game between Mt. Olive and the St. Aloysius boys. The day’s two middle games will have Vicksburg taking on Long Beach.
“We’re doing this to add a little entertainment value for the fans and maybe somebody can win a car,” Red Carpet Classic chairman Charlie McKinnie said.
To win the car, the chosen participant must make four shots — a layup, a free throw, a 3-point shot from the top of the key, and the halfcourt shot, all within a 24-second span.
Carr says he would like to see it happen.
“I would hope somebody could do it. I’ll be rooting for them. We’re covered by the insurance company American Hole-in-One that puts on these types of events. We’ve done golf tournaments, like hole-in-ones with them, and I know that a local golfer won a car through them recently,” Carr said.
“We feel this is a good promotion for the dealership and we want to show our support for our college and high school athletic teams,” Carr said.
“I think this brings some excitement for the fans of the Classic,” said RCC committee member Mark Buys. “I know George would love to give away a car.”
“It’s something that will add to the event,” adds Red Carpet Bowl committee member Ricky Mitchell. “It shows how our local sponsors care about the Red Carpet Classic and the Red Carpet Bowl. They make things happen.”
If the chosen participant can hit the first two shots, the layup and free throw, an XM Satellite radio will be theirs. A successful 3-point shot will earn them an XBox 360 and all four shots would land the car, worth nearly $20,000.
Pontiac will also award the host school a $2,500 donation to the school’s athletic program.
McKinnie said there are some requirements in order to participate.
“They have to be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license, and be a legal United States resident. All GMC and Red Carpet Classic committee family members are also prohibited. Pontiac also prohibts former college players who are within four years of their final season and high school players within two years of their final season. Also prohibted are coaches from organized leagues,” McKinnie said.
