UTICA — Bertha Lee Brown died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at her home in Utica. She was 73.

Born in Vicksburg, Mrs. Brown was a homemaker. She was a member of Second Union M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Isiah Brown; her father, Columbus Davis; her mother, Elbetha Davis Henderson; and two brothers, Johnny Davis and Tommy Davis.

She is survived by a son, Nicholas Brown of Chicago; a daughter, Shirley Brown Thomas of Chicago; one brother, Charles Davis of Starkville; one sister, Rosie Lee Horton of Utica; and two grandchildren.

Edward Doyle Hays

CARY — Edward “Doyle” Hays died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 92.

A native of Coxburg, Miss., he was the son of the late William Arthur and Emma Cora Anderson Hays. He had made his home in Cary since 1951. He built and managed the Cary Gin for some 36 years and had his own contracting company, retiring in 1998.

Mr. Hays was an active member and supporter of Goodman Memorial United Methodist Church in Cary. He loved to duck and squirrel hunt and to fish. He grew his vegetable garden for friends and neighbors.

Mr. Hays loved to visit his grandchildren and bake cakes for his friends and nursing homes.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Minnie Hays; and son, Buddy Hays.

Mr. Hays is survived by three daughters, Ailene Weldon of Shelbyville, Texas, Kathaleen Bradshaw of Belle Chasse, La., and Marianne Cooper of Pensacola, Fla.; one son, Edward Hays of Memphis, Tenn.; a special granddaughter, Darla Mahalitc; a special neighbor, Mary Sanderford; caregiver, Sherry Harris; 12 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Weldon and the Rev. Beth Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Mound Cemetery in Rolling Fork.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Saturday until the hour of the service.

Pallbearers will be Mr. Hays’ grandsons and great-grandson: Travis Hays, Chris Mahalitc, Jonathan Chandler, Joseph D. Weldon, Michael Bradshaw, Ronald Bradshaw, Scott Bradshaw and Cary Sonnier.

Honorary pallbearers will be Brother Tom Wilson, Burt Darden, Darrell Jacks, David Klaus, Ben Lamensdorf and Dr. Paul Pierce.

Memorials may be made to Goodman Memorial United Methodist Church of Cary or the Methodist Children’s Home.

Frank J. Fisher Funeral Home has charge of all arrangements.

Eliza Marbra

HERMANVILLE — Eliza Marbra died Wednesday, Jan. 30, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 70.

Mrs. Marbra was a member of Mountro Grove M.B. Church in Hermanville and the Baptist Aid.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry Turner and Fannie McBride-Turner; five brothers, Eugene Phelps, Horace Turner, Charlie Turner, Evans Turner and Zack Turner; and four sisters, Malinda Gibson, Lillie Turnipseed, Julia Windom and Mary Hampton.

She is survived by two sons, Moses J. Turner of Jackson and Riley Ellis Jr. of Hermanville; five daughters, Margaret Turner, Valeria Ellis and Danielle Marbra, all of Hermanville, Viola Turner of Jackson and Elinda Gathright of New Orleans; two sisters, Johnnie McCay of Pattison and Hester Reeder of Port Gibson; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives, including Gladys Reaux of Jackson and Dr. Voletta Williams of Red Lick.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Mountro Grove M.B. Church with the Rev. Johnny Hughes officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery under the direction of Thompson Funeral Home in Port Gibson.

Visitation will be at the church from noon Monday until the service.

Vera Mae Page

Services for Vera Mae Page will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter’s M.B. Church with Pastor Melvin Bolden officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from noon until 6 today at Robbins Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the service.

Mrs. Page died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 76.

Mrs. Page was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Leon Gaines; a sister, Angela Allen; and a grandson, Corey Simpson.

She is survived by two daughters, Deverette Trisby of Vicksburg and Peggy Simpson of New York, N.Y.; three sisters, Irene Claxton of Jackson, Charlene Jones of Vicksburg and Eva Jasper of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Henry Green of New York City; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Johnnie Woods Jr.

Johnnie Woods Jr. died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. He was 54.

Mr. Woods was a Vicksburg native.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Savage Woods; and his father, Johnnie Woods Sr.

Survivors include two sons, Gerald Woods Sr. and Jonathan Woods, both of Vicksburg; his mother, Ella Lee Woods of Vicksburg; three brothers, Ira Woods, Matthew Woods and Eddie Brent Sr., all of Vicksburg; four sisters, Ardella Wardley, Terrizena Woods, Elsie McGowan and Jacqueline Woods, all of Vicksburg; one grandchild; and nieces and nephews.
