Rev. Richard G. Burns

Services for the Rev. Richard G. Burns will be at noon Saturday at Triumph Church, 4305 I-20 Frontage Road, with the Rev. Antione Eakins officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 p.m. Friday at Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home with the family being present from 5 until 7. A memorial program will begin at 6 p.m.

Rev. Burns died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. He was 99.

A retired minister, the Rev. Burns was former pastor of New Mount Elem M.B. Church. He was a member of Cedar Grove M.B. Church.

He was a retired employee of R.G. LeTourneau and Magnolia Trailer Company. He retired in 1975 from Waterways Experiment Station.

He received a bachelor of theology and a master of theological studies from Mississippi Baptist Seminary. He served as president of the Warren County Sunday School Institute, moderator of the Warren County District Association, founding board member of the Vicksburg Center of the Mississippi Baptist Seminary, secretary of the Warren County Baptist Association, worshipful master of St. Peter Lodge No. 5, advisory council member for Mississippi Action for Progress Head Start and grand secretary of Successful Grand Lodge for 50 years.

He also served as a board member of Fisher Ferry Water District for 29 years and for ParkView Regional Home Health and Jackson Street Branch YMCA. He was a patron of St. Mary’s Chapter No. 2 Order of Eastern Star and a member of the NAACP.

Rev. Burns was preceded in death by his parents, Alexander Burns and Bertha Anderson Burns; his wives, Estella Parson Burns and Addie Barker Burns; a daughter, Carrie Thompson; five sisters, Josephine Stevens, Nellie Preacely White, Mabel Glover Balentine, Savannah McCorkle and Florine Williams; and one brother, the Rev. Alex A. Burns Jr.

Survivors include his wife, Alfreda Burns of Vicksburg; five daughters, Nellie Moseley and Delores Neal, both of Chicago, Katie Caston of Detroit, Savannah B. Hill of Monticello and Mary Helen Hall of Vicksburg; three sons, Richard Burns Jr. of Evans, Ga., Willie H. Burns of Detroit and Elder Joseph Burns of Vicksburg; five stepchildren, Elsie Hemmings of Vicksburg, Rose Thomas of Springfield, Ill., David Ward of Montgomery, Ala., Bennie Ward of Covington, Ga., and Shirley Murphy of Atlanta; 47 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; 27 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Daniel Leonard Caldwell

Daniel Leonard Caldwell, born Feb. 15, 1947, in Vicksburg, had his homegoing Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008. He was the oldest child of the late Daniel and Lillian Gray Caldwell. His paternal grandparents were the late Jonas and Rebecca Armstrong Caldwell. His maternal grandparents were the late Simpson and Hattie Mackson Gray. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Kler H. Jones Sr.

At the age of 4, Dan began the first grade. He was educated in the Warren County and Vicksburg public school systems. During these years he participated in the 4-H exhibits at the County Fair, receiving several Blue Ribbon prizes. He built a working telescope from raw material, and another prize-winning exhibit was a miniature model of the development of paper, from the tree to the factory. He graduated from Rosa A. Temple High School, class of 1963. Dan was a member of the marching and concert bands in high school. He earned a degree in chemistry from Alcorn A&M College in 1967. While attending Alcorn he was a member of the Marching Braves Band. Often his family would travel to Alcorn for a Saturday afternoon football game to hear Dan’s clarinet solo. Dan was baptized at the Oak Grove M.B. Church, under the Rev. B.L. Thomas, at the age of 7. He attended Sunday school and served on the Usher Board.

Dan began working at IBM in 1967 as an engineer. He worked there for 25 years before retiring in 1992. While working at IBM, he received a master’s degree in chemical engineering from New York University. Dan married his beloved wife, Mary, in 1968. They had two children: a son, Daniel Stephen Caldwell of Plano, Texas, and a daughter, Dr. Nicole L. Caldwell of Dallas, Texas. He had been a member of Prestonwood Baptist Church since 1983. Dan was a faithful volunteer in the Broadcast Tape Ministry. He is also survived by a sister, Elsie Caldwell Jones of Harrisburg, Pa.; and a brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Indiana Caldwell of Vicksburg. Dan also leaves a host of cousins, in-laws and friends.

Services were at 11 a.m. today at Prestonwood Baptist Church. Burial followed at Ridgeview Memorial Park in Allen, Texas, with Sparkman Dickey Funeral Home of Dallas in charge of arrangements.

Annie Bell Ash Cooper

ANGUILLA — Annie Bell Ash Cooper died Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008, at her home in Anguilla. She was 100.

Survivors include a sister, Christine Washington of Chicago; and other relatives, including Clarence Jackson of Anguilla.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Christian Light M.B. Church in Anguilla with the Rev. H.C. Hagler officiating. Burial will follow at Vicks Cemetery in Anguilla.

Rubye M. Dotson

Services for Rubye M. Dotson will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Bright Morning Star M.B. Church with the Rev. Reginald Harris officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 tonight at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home.

Mrs. Dotson died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 75.

Mrs. Dotson was a retired licensed practical nurse from Kuhn Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Bright Morning Star M.B. Church and Rose of Sharon Chapter, Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel and Olivia Robinson; and her husband, L.C. Dotson.

Survivors include her son, James Dotson Sr. of Adamsville, Ala.; one daughter, Linda Dotson of Greenville; three brothers, Curley Robinson and Mickey Robinson, both of Detroit, and Jackie Robinson of Greenville; four sisters, Marvie Bennett of Detroit and Bobbye Sharkey, Annette Webster and Olivia Bacon, all of Greenville; five grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.

Freddie Lee Hayes

Freddie Lee Hayes died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at his home. He was 82.

Mr. Hayes was an Army veteran, serving in World War II. He received the Purple Heart medal and was a member of American-Legion Tyner-Ford Post 213.

He retired from Mississippi Power & Light after 30 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Louise Miller Hayes; his parents, Ernest and Ruth Wright Hayes; one son, Larry Hayes; one sister, Caramel Marbury; and one brother, Joe Boyd.

He is survived by one daughter, Bettye Hayes Poy of Hattiesburg; three sisters, Ernestine Baker of Chicago, Mary Helen Jackson of New London, Conn., and Willie Ethel Haynes of Charleston, W.Va.; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and other relatives, including Eva Grant of Rolla, Mo., and Catherine Turpin.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Robbins Funeral Home with Frank Gardner officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Gary Wendell Hooks

Gary Wendell Hooks died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, in the Oak Ridge Community. He was 52.

Mr. Hooks had lived in Oak Ridge for the past year.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Bessie Hooks; and a brother, Ray Hooks.

He is survived by two sons, Joshua Hooks and Mathew Hooks, both of Brandon; two daughters, Melody Hooks and Michelle Hooks, both of Florence; one brother, Douglas Hooks of Vicksburg; three sisters, Glenda Davis of Tennessee and Barbara Hearn and Faye Powell, both of Vicksburg; a grandson, Brandon Hooks of Florence; and a granddaughter, Erica Hooks of Florence.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Bradley’s Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Hawkins officiating. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until the hour of service at the church.

Pallbearers will be Scott Hearn, Nelson Hearn, Michael Collins, Kelly Worthy and John Oaks.

Lawrence Larry Powell III

Lawrence Larry Powell III, infant son of Tamika Marie Bennett and Lawrence Larry Powell Jr., died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at River Region Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Charles Bennett Sr.; and his paternal grandfather, Lawrence Powell Sr.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by two sisters, Courtney Powell and Ashley Powell of Vicksburg; his maternal grandmother, Cecilia Green of Vicksburg; his paternal grandmother, Delorise Powell of Vicksburg; and other relatives.

Services were today at Cedar Hill Cemetery under the direction of Dillon-Chisley Funeral Home.

Larry Reed Sr.

GREENVILLE — Larry “Lump” Reed Sr. died Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008, at Delta Regional Medical Center in Greenville. He was 58.

Formerly of Glen Allan, Mr. Reed was a Greenville resident. He retired from U.S. Gypsum Co. in Greenville after 23 years of service.

Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Shirley Reed; one daughter, Vickie Williams of Hollandale; two sons, Larry Reed of Columbus and Roger Reed of Greenville; four sisters, Shirley Sandaire of East Lansing, Mich., Betty Baynes of Mesa, Ariz., Thelma Reed Jenkins of Greenville and Towanda Reed of Southaven; 10 grandchildren, including Roger Reed and Raheem Reed of Greenville whom he reared; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Pilgrim Rest Church in Greenville with Pastor B.T. Benson officiating. Burial will follow at Glen Allan Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Visitation will be from 3 until 5 p.m. Friday at Byas Funeral Home in Greenville.

Mary L. Singleton

EDWARDS — Mary L. Singleton died Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at her home in Edwards. She was 57.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem M.B. Church in Edwards. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at Randle Memorial Chapel in Jackson.

Patrick L. Thomas

GRACE, Miss. — Patrick L. Thomas died Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, in Menard, Ill. He was 34.

Mr. Thomas was a resident of Grace, Miss.

He is survived by his mother, Martha Thomas of Grace; his stepmother, Carolyn Powell of Greenville; six brothers, Archie Thomas of Grace, Michael Browning of Missouri, Otis Powell of Champaign, Ill., O.D. Putman Jr. of Greenville, Horace Brown of Hollandale and Lee Putman of California; three sisters, Delores Wilson, Tashiana Thomas and Kendra Thomas, all of Greenville; and aunts and uncles.

Services will be at noon Saturday at Shady Grove M.B. Church in Grace with Pastor Bruce Dorsey officiating. Burial will follow at Cameta Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.
