A Warren County man was held on assault and weapons charges this morning after an argument turned violent.

Michael Lee Smith, 49, 115 Quinola Lane, was arrested on Athens Avenue just after 5 p.m. Monday after deputies responded to his home earlier in the day, Sheriff Martin Pace said.

Deputies had been to the house at 2:15 p.m. on information a woman had been shot. After arriving, a woman was found with head injuries from being struck with a beer bottle. Another man and a child were in the house, which deputies found to have been shot into with a gun, Pace said.

Smith was held this morning without bond.

Fire destroys home on Northview Drive

A one-story home on Northview Drive was gutted by fire Monday.

Flames tore through the house quickly as Vicksburg fire officials responded to the blaze, reported by neighbors at about 11:45 a.m.

The fire was accidental and was determined to have started in a rear bedroom near an electric space heater, Vicksburg Fire Department investigator Leslie Decareaux said.

One occupant of the house, Octavius Powell, 18, was home at the time of the fire, Deputy Chief Rose Shaifer said. He was not injured.

Powell and two male siblings, aged 17 and 24, lived in the house, at 204 Northview, next to a home occupied by their father, Louis Blake, a city sewer department employee, who was at work at the time neighbors reported the fire, Shaifer said.

All four received assistance from the Red Cross at Vicksburg Area Chapter offices, director Beverly Connelly said.

3 robbed at gunpoint on Wisconsin Avenue

Three people were held at gunpoint on Wisconsin Avenue Sunday and robbed of thousands of dollars in cash, Vicksburg police said.

Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said the victims reported that two men pulled up in a dark red Ford Crown Victoria or a Mercury Grand Marquis, approached them with a handgun and took a total of $2,000. The two got back into the vehicle and took off down Enchanted Drive, the victims reported.

The armed robbery was reported to police at 8:57 p.m.

Stewart said this morning no arrest had been made.

House on Athens Avenue hit by 1 of 3 or 4 shots

Gunfire was reported on Athens Avenue early Sunday morning, Vicksburg police said.

Police responded to the shots at 2:30. Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said no injuries were reported, but one home had been hit. Witnesses said they heard three or four shots.

Stewart said this morning no arrests have been made.

Jail resident charged in second theft

A man already in jail was charged Monday with stealing a riding lawn mower from a Vicksburg Parks and Recreation facility, police said.

At about 11 a.m., Timothy Wilson, 40, 527 Feld St., was arrested at the Warren County Jail and charged with grand larceny, Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said. His charge stems from the Oct. 7 theft of a riding lawn mower valued at $9,300. According to Stewart, Wilson faces a number of other pending city and county charges regarding burglary and receiving stolen property.

Wilson’s bond was set at $100,000 and he remained in the Warren County Jail this morning.

Vicksburg man charged with selling marijuana

A Vicksburg man faces charges of selling marijuana after he was arrested Monday afternoon, police said.

Billy Stewart, 53, 815 Clark St., was picked up by authorities at 1:23 at his home, Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

Stewart was being held in the Issaquena County Jail on a $10,000 bond.

SUV, guns, bicycle among missing items

An auto theft and four burglaries were reported in the city from the weekend through Monday, police said.

A 36-inch Sanyo TV, a DVD player and assorted DVDs were reported stolen from a home in the 1300 block of Magnolia Street. The total value was listed at $1,780. Police received the report at 3 p.m. Monday

At 4:48 p.m. Monday, a bicycle valued at $100 was reported stolen from a home in the 1800 block of First East Street.

A bronze 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe was reported stolen Sunday from the parking lot of Beechwood Restaurant, 4451 Clay St. According to the report, the victim said he left the vehicle parked at the restaurant overnight. Police received the report at 12:30 p.m.

Eight firearms were reported stolen from Vicksburg Body Shop, 4105-B Clay St. Reported missing at 12:21 p.m. Sunday were a Remington .16 gauge shotgun, a Remington 30.06 rifle, a Remington .12-gauge shotgun, a Benelli .12-gauge shotgun, a Rossi .50-caliber muzzle loader, a 45/70 Handi rifle and two Remington .270 rifles. The total value was listed at $4,900. Also, $30 was stolen.

At 10:25 p.m. Saturday, an auto burglary was reported in the 4000 block of South Frontage Road. Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart said a Dell laptop computer valued at $4,000, a Blackberry listed at $500 and three $250 gift cards were missing from the 2006 Dodge Grand Caravan.

City woman injuredin morning wreck

A Vicksburg woman was in River Region Medical Center with injuries suffered in a wreck this morning.

Bernice Sanders, 42, 172 Cottage Row, was driving a 2002 Dodge Caravan on Mission 66 just south of MacArthur Place at 7:30 a.m. when it was rear-ended by a 2005 Nissan Pathfinder and pushed into the back of a 1998 Chevrolet pickup.

No condition report was available this morning.
