Vera Kate Grogan

Vera Kate GroganVera Kate Grogan died Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Olive Branch Senior Care Center in Tallulah. She was 92.

Born in Warren County, she was the daughter of the late Lena Bigby Grogan Cordell and Hezekiah Grogan and her stepfather, Steve Cordell.

Miss Grogan was a 1934 graduate of Oak Ridge High School, where she played girls’ basketball. She played in the YMCA Girl’s Basketball League and was a member of the YMCA All-Star softball team that received national recognition. She graduated from Hinds Junior College in 1936.

Miss Grogan was a veteran of World War II and was the first Vicksburg woman to be accepted in the Women’s Army Corps. She was assigned to service at the Air Transport Command base at Morrison Field, West Palm Beach, Fla., and was discharged from the WAC with the rank of corporal and from the 1103rd Army Air Force Base Unit with the rank of sergeant.

Miss Grogan retired from the Vicksburg District Corps of Engineers in 1980 as a draftsman. She was a member of First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Melvin Grogan.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Joan Grogan of Vicksburg; three nephews, Jack Grogan, Harold Grogan and Sam Grogan; and other relatives.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Green Acres Memorial Park with Dr. John G. McCall, pastor emeritus of First Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be at Riles Funeral Home from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Chase Grogan, Kenneth F. Grogan, Forbes Grogan, Martin Grogan, Tom Hill and Randy Oswalt.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Paul Piece III, Matthew Grogan, Brice Grogan, John G. McCall Jr. and Dennis McCall.

Frankie Hall

Frankie Hall died Friday, May 2, 2008, at Promise Hospital of Vicksburg. She was 59.

Mrs. Hall had worked for the Vicksburg Warren School District and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wardell Hall; her parents, Earline and Frank Kelly Jr.; a grandson, Munchearl Mondell Hall; six sisters, Zelma Kelly, Christine Promise, Susie Bell Norris, Lucille Jones, Josephine Turner and Pauline Williams; and two brothers, Ruben Kelly and Bennie Kelly.

Survivors include two daughters, Mary Hall Moore of Vicksburg and Catherine Hall of Minneapolis, Minn.; one son, Otis V. Hall of Vicksburg; one brother, Charles Kelly of Vicksburg; six grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Henry Thompson.

Robbins Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Jadon Miller

Jadon Miller died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at his home. He was 8.

Jadon was a student at Beechwood Elementary School.

He is survived by his parents, Damond Caples and Shantelle Miller, both of Vicksburg; a brother, Ja’Quarien Smith of Atlanta; six sisters, Jakhalah Brown, Jarheon Brown, Janiah Miller, Amari Caples, Kiswanis Smith and Kadameria Caples, all of Dallas; his maternal grandparents, Diane Miller and Donald Winfield of Vicksburg and James and Neicy Barnes of Tallulah; his paternal grandparents, Edith Caples, Richard Caples and Eloise Caples, all of Vicksburg; his great-grandmothers, Geneva Miller of Bronx, N.Y., and Mary Watson of Vicksburg; and friends and other relatives, including members of the Winfield, Dillon, Watson, Clifton, Miller and Caples families.

Williams Funeral Service has charge of arrangements.

Cynthia D. Mobley

TALLULAH – Cynthia D. Mobley died Sunday, May 4, 2008, at St. Francis Medical Center in Monroe. She was 28.

Ms. Mobley was a lifelong resident of Tallulah.

She is survived by two sons, Bailey Mobley and Noah Mobley, both of Tallulah; her mother and stepfather, Donna M. and Ken Barrett of Tallulah; her father and stepmother, Joseph P. Jr. and Debra Foster of Ruston, La.; two sisters, Luci Thornton and Kendall Barrett, both of Tallulah; one brother, Trey Foster of Ruston; two stepsisters, Amanda Williams and Kori Walker, both of Ruston; and one stepbrother, Shane Walker of Ruston.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Silver Cross Cemetery in Tallulah with the Rev. Cletus Moak officiating. Burial will follow under the direction of Crothers-Glenwood Funeral Home of Tallulah.

Memorials may be made to the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired in Baton Rouge.
