A Port Gibson man wanted for grand larceny was arrested in Vicksburg Tuesday, driving a car decked out to look like an unmarked police car, Vicksburg police said.

When stopped on Halls Ferry Road near its intersection with Cherry Street at 3:28 p.m., Alireza T. Chapel, 25, 124 McComb Ave., told police he was a federal agent, said Vicksburg Lt. Bobby Stewart.

Just before the arrest was made, VPD had been notified by Claiborne County officials that Chapel was headed to Vicksburg. Police quickly spotted the 2004 Crown Victoria — with flashing blue strobe lights, sirens, antennas and a PA system — and made the stop.

Chapel told police he was a Homeland Security agent from Quantico, Va., the FBI training complex outside Washington, D.C., and supplied a wallet badge, but police said it was fake. Chapel’s car had Claiborne County tags.

Chapel, charged by Vicksburg police for impersonating a police officer, was being held without bond this morning. Stewart was attempting to contact federal authorities this morning to see if charges at that level would be appropriate.

Newsome was being held without bond in the Warren County Jail this morning.

Copper reported missing from new E-911 site

Copper bars were reported stolen from the construction site of the new Warren County E-911 Dispatch Center, police said.

Eight bars of copper valued at $645 were stolen from 1401-B Clay St. at 3:40 p.m. Tuesday, police said. E-911 director Michael Gaul said the copper was expected to be used for a grounding bar in an electrical system at the new center. While he said the theft was aggravating, it shouldn’t affect progress.

At an April 30 E-911 Commission meeting, Gaul said it likely will be fall before the agency moves to the new building.

The move comes after years of operating in a former breakroom at the county jail and since then in a basement room under the steps of the Warren County Courthouse.
