In its 16th year, the Vicksburg Chamber Choir is going bilingual with this year’s spring concert, “Bach to Bernstein,” set for Tuesday night.

“The Bach is being sung in German, and the Bernstein will be done in Hebrew,” said Mary Fowler, the choir’s publicity chairman. “Right now the language has been the most difficult part, but we’re improving. We aim for quality – not just volume.”

The choir will perform J.S. Bach’s “Cantata #4” and Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms,” and will be accompanied by Barbara Tracy on organ, Denise Ragsdale on piano/synthesizer and an ensemble of brass, string and percussion. The concert will begin at 7:30, and the translated lyrics will be printed in the concert program.

The concert will be at First Presbyterian Church, at 1501 Cherry St., and admission is free. The VCC is comprised of 25 singers this year and has been practicing since late February for the spring concert, the first of two performed annually. Fowler said the Vicksburg Chamber Choir is hoping to match the attendance of last year’s fall concert with the one Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 1501 Cherry St.

“There must have been somewhere in the vicinity of 250 people there. It was packed – as full as I have ever seen it,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll see that kind of support again this year.”
