A Vicksburg woman drowned Monday evening after suffering a seizure and falling from a boat into a private pond in Redwood, officials said.

The woman was identified as Donna Sue Shute Marshall, 53, 103 Villanova Place, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey. He said she died of freshwater drowning.

“I’m just still in shock,” said Marshall’s 27-year-old son, Phillip Shute. “Reality hasn’t set in yet.”

Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said the victim and Paul Marshall, also of 103 Villanova Place, were fishing in a boat in the 3700 block of Redwood Road, when she fell out at about 5:30 p.m. Paul Marshall pulled her out of the water and to the bank, but had to have help to attempt to resuscitate her.

Paul Marshall, neighbors and Warren County deputies performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation until a Vicksburg ambulance arrived.

Phillip Shute said his mother, a Vicksburg native who was a nurse retired from Shady Lawn Nursing Home, started having seizures about two or three months ago.

“It was one of those things that we just hadn’t figured out yet,” he said. “Hopefully, as things go along, we can eventually know a little more about what happened.”

The Marshalls fished often and regularly took her six grandchildren with them, her son said. “She died doing what she loved and with the man she loved,” he said.

Donna Marshall had two children, Phillip and his 25-year-old sister, Phyllis Shute. She was the daughter of Eddie Lollar and Bertha Emfinger.
