A 13-year-old girl died Tuesday afternoon when the car her mother was driving veered off Interstate 20 in Madison Parish and struck a tree.
A Louisiana State Police Troop F report said an 8-year-old boy, the victim’s brother, was also a passenger in the 2005 Chevrolet Equinox driven by 43-year-old Hattiesburg resident Leslie McGill, mother of the child who was killed.
The mother and the 8-year-old were taken to Madison Parish Hospital with moderate injuries, but condition reports were not available. The girl, identified as Marissa A. McGill, was pronounced dead at the scene, between Tallulah and Mound.
A hospital spokesman said the mother was not at the hospital this morning, but could not confirm if the patient had been released or transferred to another hospital. State police said McGill was cited for careless operation of a motor vehicle.
Marissa was riding in the passenger’s seat, while the boy was in the back seat, Louisiana officials said.
The crash occurred at 12:50 p.m. State police said McGill was westbound when the vehicle ran off the right side of the roadway.Madison Parish Chief Deputy Sammie Byrd said this morning that he believed the family was moving from Mississippi to Texas.
