City man surrenders, held on charge of rape|[06/27/08]

A Vicksburg man who was wanted on rape charges surrendered to Vicksburg police Thursday.

Dexter Smith, 19, 1204 Howard St., was sought on a charge for a rape reported Wednesday, Lt. Bobby Stewart said.

Smith was in custody this morning awaiting his initial court appearance. His bond was set at $25,000.

Lawn tools, stereo works hot in burglaries in city

Three burglaries were reported Thursday, said Vicksburg Police Lt. Bobby Stewart:

A tile saw valued at $900, a power paint sprayer valued at $400, two Stihl weed trimmers valued at $200 each, a Homelite edger valued at $279 and a Homelite branch trimmer valued at $200 were reported stolen at 8:56 a.m. from the 100 block of Brown’s Alley.

A Sanyo 13-inch television valued at $120 and a guitar valued at $300 were reported stolen at 2 p.m. in the 1000 block of Jackson Street.

A Bose CD recorder valued at $375 was reported stolen out of a 2008 Volkswagen at 5:42 p.m. in the 1700 block of Openwood Street.

Fire damages home in Waltersville Estates

A fire that started in an upstairs bedroom of a home in Waltersville Estates Thursday slightly damaged the house, said Capt. Erron Flowers of the Vicksburg Fire Department. No injuries were reported

The fire started just after 9:30 a.m. at 140 King Drive, Apt. D. Flames and smoke were contained to a bedroom mattress, Flowers said.

Lillie Carter and her four children were out of the house before fire officials arrived. The home is owned by the Vicksburg Housing Authority.
