The body of Vicksburg resident Shelly Hill Sr. was pulled from a private lake in Claiborne County Sunday afternoon, said county coroner J.W. Mallett, a day after Hill had gone missing while fishing on the lake.
“Apparently he had been coming down to this lake for years to go fishing. He left home around 6:30 (Saturday) morning to go fishing and didn’t return home that evening, so a search and dive crew came out today to drag the lake,” Mallett said on Sunday.
The body of Hill, 63, 1906 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., was found by the search team at 3:12 p.m. Mallett said. The team found his body in the vicinity of where Hill’s vacant boat was discovered floating on the lake, he said. The private, unnamed lake is located on Shiloh Road about seven miles northwest of Port Gibson, Mallett said.
“At this point we really don’t know what occurred. A storm had come over at about 1 p.m. (Saturday), but other than that, we really don’t know what the causes could be. Apparently no one had seen him out on the lake,” Mallett said.
An autopsy was to be performed today at the Mississippi Crime Lab in Jackson. Hill was reportedly a mechanic at Sheffield Rentals on U.S. 61 south.
Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
