The show will go on.
A successful, 11th-hour deal between Vicksburg officials and the production company for the fireworks that have capped off the city’s Independence Day celebration for years has saved the display from cancellation.
Officials with Pennsylvania-based PyroAgent will supply $25,000 of fireworks for a 22-minute light show beginning at 9 Friday night, after the Beach Boys tribute band wraps up its set, city communications director Barry Graham said this morning.
“This show takes four months of planning and we’ll ensure it’s the same kind of show,” Graham said.
The city had said Thursday afternoon a highway accident in Missouri involving the truck carrying the fireworks would cancel the display. Injuries to the driver were minor, Graham said, but computers used to choreograph the show were severely damaged. Also, PyroAgent had problems securing necessary insurance for the event.
“Oh, yes. It’s insured,” Graham said, adding callbacks from the company later in the day confirmed a backup plan could be worked out. The shipment was to arrive this afternoon, Graham said.
The fireworks display in Vicksburg has drawn as many as 12,000 people in years past, and has been the highlight of the city’s Independence Day celebration.

The Mid-South Navy Band is traveling to Vicksburg from Memphis to perform Saturday and Sunday at First Baptist Church on Cherry Street. “It is going to be a great show,” said Graham.
Sunday afternoon’s concert will begin at 3 and will feature the full, 28-member Navy Band Wind Ensemble. The band is comprised of active duty sailors and is the largest among those performing throughout the mid-south region. Ltg. David Latour is the band’s director. Sunday’s concert will also feature retired Brig. Gen. Robert Crear, Bill Hallberg, Jane Byrd Joseph, Elizabeth Joseph, Riley Harper and Dr. Matt Buckles. A traditional cake and ice cream social will follow Sunday’s events.
