A Warren County E-911 dispatcher was jailed Thursday, charged with assisting a fugitive avoid arrest, Warren County Sheriff Martin Pace said.
LaShaunta Bright, 24, was arrested at her home at 1208 Crawford St. at 5:45 Thursday morning and charged with hindering prosecution and rendering criminal assistance, which both fall under the state’s obstruction of justice statute.
“It’s a shame that this person violated a position of trust and would risk her career and endanger the lives of these officers,” Pace said. “This person needs to be prosecuted to the fullest.”
The man she is accused of tipping off that authorities were headed his way was also arrested.
Pace identified him as Alonzo McRunnels, 28, who gave deputies an address of 247 Edwards St. in Edwards. He was wanted on a warrant from Vicksburg Police.
Pace said investigators from his office and Vicksburg Police, working on information gathered in their investigation to serve the warrant, went to a home at 15924 Mississippi 465 at about 4 a.m. and did not find the suspect. They returned hours later and found McRunnels hiding under a pile of laundry, Pace said.
Pace said Bright is believed to have tipped off McRunnels the first time officers were headed his way.
McRunnels and Bright were both in the Warren County Jail Thursday night
McRunnels, whose charges of possession of cocaine with intent to distribute date to June 17, was held on a $25,000 bond. Bright’s bond was set at $5,000.
E-911 Dispatch Director Michael Gaul was reportedly in a meeting Thursday afternoon and could not be reached for information about Bright or how long she had been employed.
The office has said before the dispatchers and their backgrounds are screened before employment.
