A Redwood man was killed near his home this morning in a two-vehicle wreck on U.S. 61.
Joseph Kyle Barnett, 23, 830 Redwood Road, was ejected from his 2008 Chevrolet Colorado pickup and was pronounced dead at River Region Medical Center at 7:28 from severe head injuries, said Warren County Coroner Doug Huskey.
The driver of the second vehicle, a 1995 Chevrolet Lumina, was Robert Qualls, 61, 255 Sammy Young Road. Qualls was taken to River Region with back and neck injuries, said Mississippi Highway Safety Patrol Trooper Wayne Smith.
Qualls was being transferred from the hospital, said River Region marketing assistant Allen Karel.
The highway patrol and Warren County deputies responded to the wreck at 6:22 in the northbound lane of the highway at its intersection with Redwood Road.
Each of the drivers was alone and neither was wearing a seat belt, Smith said.
“It appears that Barnett was attempting to cross Highway 61 heading east onto Redwood Road and collided with Qualls,” Smith said.
Barnett was the son of Joseph M. Barnett of Redwood and Virginia Love of Yazoo City, Huskey said. He is believed to leave at least one brother, with whom he lived, and a sister, Huskey said. Barnett was employed by an independent concrete contractor in Redwood, Huskey said.
Barnett’s family members, contacted this morning, said they were too upset to speak about him.
Fisher Funeral Home in Vicksburg was to be in charge of arrangements.
Barnett’s death is the second roadway fatality in Warren County this year.
In January, Texarkana, Ark., resident William Roy O’Neal was killed in a wreck involving two 18-wheelers at U.S. 61 and North Washington Street.
