CLINTON – Don’t fret, Warren Central girls basketball faithful, Sha’Kayla Caples is not going to play guard.
The three-time defending Vicksburg Post Girls Player of the Year started at guard for the North All-Stars during the 44th annual Mississippi Association of Coaches Basketball Classic at Mississippi College.
When asked about the position change, WC coach Donny Fuller held up four fingers, smiled and indicated that Caples will stay as a post player.
Caples scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds, and WC teammate Karnina Bunch netted five points, including one 3-pointer, and had three assists to lead the North to a 96-76 victory. The North improved its series lead to 24-20.
“It was good to be out there, but I wish I would have done better,” Bunch said. “I wasn’t happy with the way I played at all.”
Playing out of position, especially in an all-star game, is not uncommon. Players have two practices with a new set of teammates. It also kept Bunch and Caples from being on the floor at the same time for more than a few minutes.
“It was good to be out there with her,” Bunch said. “But I would have liked to been out there more with her on the floor.”
Caples played 10 minutes in the first half, hit 2 of 4 shots for four points, had three rebounds and a steal. She hit her first basket six minutes into the game, then connected on a corner 18-footer with 2:42 to play to give the North a 44-32 lead. Bunch played 6 1/2 minutes in the first half and one minute after checking in for the first time, she buried a 3-pointer.
In the second half, Caples scored four points and Bunch added two as the North led by double-digits throughout the final 20 minutes. Caples also snagged a pair rebounds in the second half.
Indianola-Gentry’s Laneisha Jennie led all scorers with 18 points for the North, while Joncyee Sanders of Brandon led the South with 13.
