Augusta Anderson

Services for Augusta Anderson will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Traveler’s Rest M.B. Church with the Rev. Elzie O’Neal officiating. Burial will follow at Hickory Tree Cemetery on Bovina Cutoff Road. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Friday at W.H. Jefferson Funeral Home and Saturday at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the service.

Mrs. Anderson died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at her home in Vicksburg. She was 82.

A homemaker, Mrs. Anderson was born in Delta, La. She was a member of Hickory Tree M.B. Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Solomon Sims and Mary Ella Jackson; a daughter, Gloria Anderson; a son, Curtis Lee Anderson; two brothers, Johnnie Sims and Mack Sims; and two sisters, Saforina Ellis and Lanie Coleman.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Ernest Anderson Sr. of Vicksburg; seven sons, Eddie McCoy, Jessie McCoy, Larry Anderson and Michael Anderson, all of Vicksburg, Ernest Anderson Jr. of Winfield, La., Willie Lee Anderson of Portland, Ore., and Tommie Lee Anderson of Houston, Texas; two daughters, Barbara Ware-Hodge of Edwards and Emma Lee Judge of Vicksburg; 65 grandchildren; 116 great-grandchildren; 14 great-great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives, including Loraine Darden, Michael Tolliver, Sheryl Tolliver, Brelyn Gross and Sylvester Bowman, all of Vicksburg.

Veronica Lachelle Armstrong

CARY – Veronica Lachelle Armstrong died Saturday, July 12, 2008, at University Medical Center in Jackson. She was 35.

Ms. Armstrong was a former resident of Chicago.

Survivors include her parents, Eugene Armstrong and Sammie Louis Armstrong, both of Cary; a son, Kentria Lumpkins of Cary; a daughter, Kailia L. Lumpkins of Cary; a brother, Carl Watley of Cary; and a sister, Marion Warren of Atlanta.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion M.B. Church in Cary with the Rev. Henry Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at Cary Community Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 until 7 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Winnie Pearl Scott Bounds

Winnie Pearl Scott Bounds died Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at River Region Medical Center. She was 56.

Miss Bounds was a former employee of Ameristar Casino.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Eddie Scott Sr. and Sarah Cotton Scott; two brothers, Eddie Scott Jr. and Phillip Scott Sr.; two sisters, Madora Richmond and Dorothy Slaughter.

Survivors include her daughter, Claudia B. Scott of Vicksburg; four brothers, Richard Scott Sr. of Vicksburg, Robert Scott of Fayette, Jordan Smith Jr. of Vicksburg and Jessie Gray of Chicago; a sister, Patricia Cole of Vicksburg; a granddaughter; nieces, nephews and the Turner, Moore, Smith, Henderson, Brown, Bounds and Clark families.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Zion Travelers M.B. Church with the Rev. James Edward Shaw officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Alma Evans

Alma Evans died Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula in California. She was 64.

Mrs. Evans was born in Vicksburg to D.J. and Bell Jones. She attended elementary and high school in Vicksburg and was a graduate of Temple High School. She lived overseas for a number of years with her first husband before returning to Fort Ord. She worked for and retired from the Monterey Unified School District.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Cynthia Ferrias; two brothers, Jerry D. Jones and James Jones Sr.; and her husbands, Chester Lee and Willie James Evans.

Survivors include one daughter, Sonja Taylor of Sacramento, Calif.; one son, Tony Lee of Santa Cruz, Calif.; two sisters, Ruby Lee Buck of San Francisco, Calif., and Myrtis Silas of Menlo Park, Calif.; four brothers, Melvin Jones of Daly City, Calif., Earnest Jones of San Francisco, Charles Jones of Menlo Park and Robert Jones of Vicksburg; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and other relatives, including Willie Mae Jones and Carrie Bell Jones.

Lakeview Memorial Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Melvin Thomas Ragan Sr.

Melvin Thomas Ragan Sr. went home to be with his Savior on Monday morning, July 14, 2008, at the Olive Branch Senior Care Home in Tallulah. He was 86 years old.

Mr. Ragan was born in Granville County, N.C., and was a resident of Portsmouth, Va., for 59 years. He was a World War II Army veteran and a life member of Masonic Lodge No. 100 of Portsmouth. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church in Portsmouth and was retired from the automobile business.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Samual Ragan and Emma Claire Ragan; five brothers; and one sister.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kathleen Ragan, and a daughter, Susan Ragan Barnes, both of Vicksburg; daughter, Sandra Ragan Perry of Travelers Rest, S.C.; one son, Melvin T. Ragan Jr. of Portsmouth; sister, Dorothy R. Jones of Greensboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons Ronald D. Perry, Rick R. Perry, Michael “Tye” Ragan, Patrick J. Barnes and sons-in-law Rob D. Perry and Albert M. Barnes.

Rev. Isaac Robinson Sr.

ROLLING FORK – The Rev. Isaac “Jab” Robinson Sr. died Monday, July 14, 2008, at his home in Rolling Fork. He was 93.

Mr. Robinson worked as a barber for 79 years.

He is survived by his wife, Dannie Robinson of Rolling Fork; three sons, Isaac D. Robinson Jr. and James Robinson, both of Rolling Fork, and Jackie Robinson of Jackson; six daughters, Annie Mae Fung of Arlington, Texas, Hazel Ruth Rogers of Radcliff, Ky., Nona Jean Jones of St. Louis, Mo., Elizabeth Frazier of Nashville, Tenn., Velvaline Whitney of Memphis and Deborah Faye Anderson of Rolling Fork; 26 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with Pastor Elijah Eason officiating. Burial will follow at Green Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 until 6 p.m. Friday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Mary Sutton

ROLLING FORK – Mary Sutton died Sunday, July 13, 2008, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital. She was 86.

Mrs. Sutton is survived by three sons, Ras Sutton and Reginald Sutton, both of Nitta Yuma, and J.W. Sutton of Rolling Fork; five daughters, Pearly Holmes and Martha Hampton, both of Chicago, Mary Sutton of Anguilla, and Marie Barnes and Maggie Jones, both of St. Louis; one brother, Etter Jean Sutton of St. Louis; six sisters, Dora Morris, Cora Stamps and Edna Weatherspoon, all of Nitta Yuma, Barbara Weatherspoon and Adline Castleberry, both of Flint, Mich., and Ruth Weatherspoon of Memphis; 34 grandchildren; 82 great-grandchildren; and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Sunday at Chapel of the Cross in Nitta Yuma with Pastor Chris Styles officiating. Burial will follow at Nitta Yuma Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 until 5 p.m. Saturday at Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Gloria Stein Williams

Services for Gloria Stein Williams will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Vision Family Worship Center with the Rev. Alfred Lassiter officiating. Burial will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until 6 p.m. Friday and one hour before the service at the church.

Mrs. Williams died Friday, July 11, 2008, at her home. She was 53.

Mrs. Williams was a former employee of Walnut Hills. She was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elijah Williams.

Survivors include her mother, Alma Robinson of Vicksburg; five brothers, Cleothia Williams, Charles Williams and Michael Robinson, all of Vicksburg, Leon Williams of Waynesboro and Freddie Williams of Saginaw, Mich.; three sisters, Margaret Williams, Herdcine Williams and Linda Sykes, all of Vicksburg; her fiance, Wesley Smith of Vicksburg; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends, including Thelma Mason of Joliet, Ill., Johnnie Mason of Uba, Calif., and Robert Mason of Greenville.
