Smith was hired as a guard June 3 and was on probationary employment status. He was arrested on Clay Street Monday afternoon by Pace, Warren County Undersheriff Jeff Riggs, Detective Mike Traxler and an agent from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation. Recovered was tobacco and an ounce of marijuana, and investigators believe Smith intended to deliver the marijuana to the jail, Pace said.

“Regardless of background checks and internal audits, we’re dealing with human beings and there’s always a possibility that an employee will make a terrible decision,” Pace said. “The introduction of any contraband into a jail facility by anyone is a criminal offense, and my position is they will be arrested and prosecuted.”
