Williamses celebrate 60th anniversary

Tommie Lee Williams and Frances Pearline Miller Williams are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary today. They were married Sept. 7, 1948, at the home of the Rev. A.B. Reid. They will be honored at a worship ceremony at Holy Grove M.B. Church, followed by a dinner in the church hall.
Mrs. Williams graduated from Bowman High School and attended Southern Christian Institute before becoming a licensed practical nurse through at Kuhn Memorial Hospital. She later attended Hinds Junior College and became a registered nurse. She worked for seven years as a private-duty nurse and more than 34 years in area hospitals and was a 4-H Club leader.
She was recognized by the Blue Cross-Blue Shield Central Region as a 2004 Ageless Hero in Vitality. She served as a school board trustee for the Vicksburg Warren District and serves on the Central Mississippi Planning and Development District Aging Advisory Committee for Warren County.
Mr. Williams, a veteran of the Army, received plumbing certification from Alcorn College and was a Cub Scout leader. He worked as a Master Plumber until 1967. After losing his eyesight, he attended Hinds VA Institute in Hinds, Ill., and worked in the Civil Rights movement. He established We Care Community Services, a children’s choir and the Sunday School Lessons. He served as a spokesman to President Jimmy Carter, advocating the needs of the community’s poor.
He was recognized by the Caring Institute as one of the most caring people in America, receiving an award in 1994 in Washington, D.C.
Mr. and Mrs. Williams both serve on the board of the Boys and Girls Club in Vicksburg.
They have five children: Yvonne Marie, Adena Laverne, Tommie Lee Jr., Perla Leahrene and Robert Thomas.
They also have 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
