Conservatory offering music class for the little ones

Preschool children have the opportunity to experiment with their musical side thanks to a new class offered by the Holy Trinity Conservatory of the Fine Arts. Treble Tots, a weekly music class for children ages 3 and 4, focuses on movement, expression and rhythm.
“I am very excited,” said teacher Sheila Hess. “This age group doesn’t have a lot they are able to do. Older brothers and sisters have more options, but this class is for the younger ones.”
During the class, each child will learn to sing, play instruments and create, respond to and understand music.
“We decided to add the preschool program, in part, because of the Mozart theory,” said Conservatory director Dorothy Brasfield. “Music has been proved to develop thinking skills. That is why they make classical CDs for baby cribs now. We had a void when it came to the younger ones and we had a teacher and a facility open, so we decided to inaugurate the program.”
Brasfield compares Treble Tots to other well-known music programs for young children such as Kindermusik and Musikarten.
“I have fun,” said 4-year-old Michael Nation Jr., the son of the Rev. Michael and Cheryl Nation, adding that his favorite part of the day is “jumping around and up and down.”
“Hopefully, in rhythm with the music,” added Brasfield with a laugh.
The Conservatory was created in 2005 by Brasfield, who said she had always dreamed of opening a fine arts program. It has continued to grow, with the addition of students, teachers and classes.
In addition to the preschool program, the Conservatory offers art, piano, string, woodwind, brass and voice classes for all ages; all but the piano class are seeking students.
Treble Tots is for 3- and 4-year-olds and meets from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. each Monday at the Holy Trinity Conservatory of the Fine Arts. The cost is $50 per month, plus a $25 registration fee. For information on the Conservatory’s other programs or to enroll in Treble Tots, call 601-636-7150.
