Talk about a family rivalry.
For the first time in their careers, Tiffany and Brittany Fuller will be on the same softball field as members of different teams. Tiffany and Gulf Coast Community College and William Carey University’s Brittany are scheduled to square off on Saturday morning in Hattiesburg at the Southern Miss Invitational.
The former Warren Central standouts have played as teammates for several years and the youngest sister, Mandy, is still a Warren Central player.
Rhea Fuller said at a recent Warren Central game while watching Mandy play that he hopes Brittany is pitching to Tiffany in the bottom of the last inning with the winning run on base.
And who would he cheer for?
He had no comment.
Huge win for Smithhart, Flashes
Less than a week ago, St. Aloysius beat Cathedral with a dramatic drive in the closing minutes.
Down by 4 points, 50 yards from the end zone with no timeouts, the Flashes drove the length of the field in less than a minute. Chris Lewis’ touchdown pass to Ryno Martin-Nez with 17 seconds to play gave the visiting Flashes a victory and ruined Cathedral’s homecoming.
For first-year St. Al coach B.J. Smithhart, it was the best win in his young career. Not only did the Flashes beat their biggest rival on their biggest rival’s homecoming night, they moved into strong position for one of four playoff berths.
The Flashes have already lost to powerful Bogue Chitto. Puckett and Mount Olive are expected to top the region, leaving the coveted fourth playoff spot up for grabs. St. Al, if it wins the remaining games the Flashes should win, they’re the most likely playoff contender.
Wright keeps pushing right buttons at PCA
Each year, Porters Chapel Academy football coach Randy Wright bemoans his team’s lack of size and depth, then makes even his team’s weakest opponents resemble last year’s LSU squad. Each year the Eagles are a force on the academy level.
The Eagles are ranked No. 7 in The Associated Press weekly prep football poll. They are No. 7 among all academy schools from Jackson Prep on down. If the polls were broken down into Academy A, AA and AAA, the Eagles would be No. 1 in Class A.
The ranking is deserving and the Eagles show no signs of letting the accolades get to their heads. Porters Chapel rang up 42 points in the first half on West Memphis, Ark., last Friday night. The Eagles won by 36 the previous Friday.
Their train is rolling and is showing no signs of slowing down.
