Southern knocks off Jackson State, 35-28

Bryant Lee passed for 266 yards and two touchdowns to lead Southern to its third straight win, 35-28 over Jackson State on Saturday night.

Southern (3-2, 2-0 Southwestern Athletic Conference) ended a two-game losing streak to Jackson State.

The Jaguars trailed 7-3 before Lee connected with Juamorris Stewart on a 37-yard touchdown pass for a 10-7 lead with 8:30 left in the first half.

Four minutes later, Lee again found Stewart for a 33-yard touchdown pass to give Southern a 16-7 lead with 4:04 remaining. Stewart finished with 179 yards on eight catches.

Southern, which had 415 yards of offense, got fourth quarter touchdown runs of 2 yards from Kendrick Smith and 26 yards from Silas Gibbs to stretch its lead to 35-20 with two minutes left in the game.

Jackson State (1-4, 0-1), which lost its third straight game, got two touchdown passes from Trae Rutland, but committed 10 penalties and had three turnovers.

Millsaps 55, DePauw 13

Juan Joseph amassed 410 total yards and four touchdowns as Millsaps (5-0, 3-0 SCAC) rolled up 590 yards of offense in a rout of DePauw University (3-1, 2-1).

Joseph completed 33 of 43 passes for 345 yards and two touchdowns, and ran for 65 yards and two more scores. Burt Pereira caught four passes for 38 yardss and also threw two touchdown passes for Millsaps, and three receivers finished with 90 yards or more.

Defensive back Marcus Harris, a former Vicksburg High star, had an interception.

MC 21, La. College 19

Mississippi College jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead, then had to hang on to beat Louisiana College.

Tommy Reyer threw a 12-yard touchdown pass to Jeremy Packer and then ran for a 9-yard score as Mississippi College (2-3, 2-1 ASC) got off to a fast start. A 48-yard touchdown pass from Tarkan weston to Brian Richardson made it 21-0 with 12:13 to play in the second quarter.

Louisiana College quarterback Derek Lewis threw a pair of touchdown passes in the second half, however, and the Wildcats (2-2, 0-2) ralled to make it 21-19 on a 7-yard TD run by Detrick James with 6:47 left in the game. A 2-point conversion pass failed. Louisiana College got the ball back twice in the final stretch. The first drive ended with a punt deep in its own territory, and the last ended on an completion from the MC 42 as time expired.

James ran for 135 yards and one touchdown on only 14 carries for Louisiana College, while Lewis was 23-of-38 passing for 245 yards and two TDs. Taylor Huffman caught 12 passes for 110 yards.

For Mississippi College, Desmond Mays ran for 140 yards on 25 carries and Reyer was 13-for-26 passing for 137 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. Reyer also lost one fumble.
