Approval for construction of new structures on Cherry Street was given Tuesday, and the architect who presented the projects said he hopes to break ground by Christmas on both.

Doug Lum, owner of LUM Architecture, submitted two requests to the Vicksburg Board of Architectural Review on behalf of Betty Bullard and Jimmy Gouras. The request for Bullard was for a single-story, 24-foot-by-26-foot cottage to be built at 902 Cherry St., facing Main Street, on the lot that is home to Main Street Market.

Gouras’ request was for a single-story office building to be built at 1106 Cherry St.

Both requests were approved by the board pending Lum’s bringing back and getting approved samples of shingles to be used on the cottage and bricks to be used on the office building.

Also on Tuesday, the board approved a request from Marianne Floyd to remove the canopies on her building at 1311 Washington St., home to The Purple Ladder deli and formerly The Chocolate Derby.

Board members at Tuesday’s regular meeting were Tom Pharr, Charlie Gholson, Dorwin Shields, Toni Lanford-Ferguson and Nelda Sampey.
