You don’t have to search the television for the latest in talent. It can be found right here in Vicksburg, and will be showcased Thursday at Warren Central High School’s second annual WC Idol.

“We have a good group,” said choir director Nancy Robertson. “It’s going to be pretty cool.”

The WC Idol preliminary competition will be at 6 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium at Warren Central High School, 1000 Mississippi 27. Tickets will be $5 at the door.

Students at the school had the opportunity to enter any of the following categories: vocal individual, vocal group, dance, instrumentalist individual and instrumentalist group.

“We even have a teacher category,” said Robertson.

About 40 acts are lined up to participate in the preliminary competition, which will be used to trim the group to the top two in each category.

Judges will be Melanie Sanders, a former Miss Vicksburg, WC graduate and finalist on the first season of Fox’s hit TV series “American Idol”; Holly Cewning, a WC graduate; and Mitchell Beauman, a Vicksburg High grad and finalist on “American Idol.”

“The top winner in each group will receive $100 and the top two will continue on to the finals,” said Robertson. “The final round is for the students and will be Oct. 28. The students will vote by ballot to choose the winner, who will receive another $100.”

The WC Idol preliminary will be at 6 p.m. in the WC auditorium and is open to the public. Tickets will be $5 at the door.

Proceeds will help fund the WC choir’s trip to competition. Last year’s event raised about $5,000 and was used to purchase a new sound system for the school.
