Loviza announces plans for District 4 school post

Joe Loviza has announced his candidacy for the District 4 spot on the Vicksburg Warren School District’s Board of Trustees.

His name will appear on ballots Nov. 4 along with substitute teacher Katrina Johnson’s and land surveyor Kimble Slaton’s. The winner will occupy the seat of Jan Daigre, who is not seeking re-election. District 4 is in southwest Warren County.

Loviza, 68, is a graduate of St. Aloysius High School and a Navy veteran. He earned five decorations for his service, including the Meritorious Service Award. He was director of vo-tech and adult education at Hinds Community College’s Vicksburg campus for 10 years before being named dean, a post he held for 20 years. He helped start the Hinds vo-tech center and the Consortium of Higher Education. He was an adjunct teacher at Mississippi State and is in Who’s Who of American Education and Personalities of the South.

From 1993-97, Loviza was mayor of Vicksburg. He has had leadership roles in the Lions Club, Vicksburg Warren County Historical Society, Delta Council, Mississippi Municipal Association,  Central Mississippi Planning and Development District and Vicksburg Parks and Recreation Commission. He is chairman of TRIAD and secretary of the Vicksburg National Military Park Guides Association. He is on the Old Court House Museum and Warren County Recreation Commission boards.

Loviza pledges to support “the students, teachers and administrators in the system as we work together in preparing our young people to meet the challenges of a high-tech world.”

Terms on the five-member board are for six years each and rotate so the entire board is never new.
