ESPN hits local radio

ESPN Radio has found a home in Vicksburg. Local radio station 1420 AM is now 1420 ESPN.

Vicksburg sports fans can now get their fill of “Mike and Mike in the Morning” or catch the “The Herd” with Colin Cowherd.

“There was a hole for it in the local market,” said 1420 ESPN sales manager John Patrick. “There wasn’t a full time sports radio station and now we have the best because ESPN is the brand name. Everyone knows what it is.”

Sports talk will be carried 24/7 on the new station which went to the ESPN format on Labor Day weekend. Live score updates from the NFL, college football and basketball, the NBA and major league baseball are all part of the package.

Patrick says the station will eventually move into local sports.

“That’s our long range plan. We’re talking with the local high school athletic directors about providing updates about their school’s athletic programs. We may eventually get back to doing local play-by-play,” Patrick said.

Local sports coverage suffered a setback earlier in the fall when River 101.3 FM decided to drop Warren Central High School football. St. Aloysius High School football was also dropped because of a tough advertising market.
