Updated flood elevation maps will be available next week

Published 12:00 am Saturday, November 1, 2008

New flood elevation maps for Vicksburg and Warren County will be available for public viewing inside local government offices once they become effective Wednesday.

The first full-scale updates to the maps since the 1980s will define the flood elevations and definitions as determined by FEMA for 2008.

A public hearing at 10 a.m. Monday before Warren County supervisors following regular business will gather public comments on the maps. An ordinance to align local laws with state flood plain management regulations will also be up for consideration. Vicksburg officials approved legal procedures for the updated flood regulations Friday.

Maps will be located in the Warren County Building Permit Department, in the basement of the courthouse and at the Vicksburg Inspections Department at 819 South St. Digital versions are expected at a later date, officials said.

Current maps will contain more defined categories for showing areas with the greatest flood risks, dividing the county into more than 30 sections and devoting a detailed map for that section. Resulting detail has provided more information on flood prone areas such as narrow drainage bayous county wide and the Kings and Chickasaw communities hit hard by spring 2008 floods.

Points of enforcement to be added to the local flood plain management plan include rights of entry and inspection of properties. Inside Vicksburg, the floodplain manager is the inspections department head. Warren County employs such a position only for enforcement of its subdivision ordinance.
