The deadline to adopt an “angel” for Christmas gifts has been extended to noon Dec. 13.

The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, which collects and distributes gifts to underprivileged children, allows adoption of angels at Pemberton Square mall, near Dillard’s.

Capt. Patrick Lyons of The Salvation Army in Vicksburg said The Salvation Army has seen an increase in requests this year, with 877 children being registered for the program in Vicksburg. He said 677 angels had been adopted.

“With only a week left before distribution, the case of 200 un-adopted angels is a growing concern,” Lyons said. “It’s hard to explain the economy to children.”
