A woman walking along the railroad tracks near Levee and Lee streets Friday night was struck and injured by a train.
Michelle Haynes, 42, 89 Red Hawk Road, was taken to River Region Medical Center where she was being treated around 10 p.m.
Investigating Vicksburg police officer Ron Kinard said Haynes was conscious as rescue workers prepared her to go to the hospital.
“The train engineer said she crossed the railroad tracks down nearer to the casino (DiamondJacks) and was walking along the railroad bed,” Kinard said. “The engineer blew the whistle several times to try to get her to move, but she just waved and kept walking.”
The engineer braked the train but was unable to stop it in time, Kinard added.
Multiple police cars and rescue vehicles responded to the area near around Lee, Pearl and Levee streets just after 9 p.m.
The Kansas City Southern train was stopped while the engineer provided police with a statement and waited for railroad officials to arrive on site for a routine investigation.
Train-pedestrian incidents have been uncommon in Vicksburg, Kinard said, with perhaps one other case during his five years with the police department.
